Huskers, 1971. "They beat the #1, #2, and #3 ranked teams, including the 'Game of the Century' against Oklahoma.

Surprised?

1995 team was #5.

There's no way the '95 team is #4 and '01 Miami is so far back. Absolute joke.

FYI, most on r/CFB, across all fanbases think this list is total garbage; primarily for this reason.

Afterall... it is ESPiN; and they gave us this treasure....

Let it be know that the 71 team only had 3 teams on the schedule that scored more than one TD beating the #2,#3,#4 teams in the country at years end..

95 may have toyed with teams but the 71 team especially on defense destroyed everyone but Oklahoma who at the time was breaking the rushing records per game..

'71 NU beat #2,#3 and #4 in the final poll, blowing out all but OU. No one else has ever done that. Won 12 of 13 by 24+ points. Gave up only 8 ppg. and never scored less than 31. Damn. The "weak" Big 8 finished 1,2,3 in the final AP Poll.

'95 NU 's closest win was 14 pts. and they defeated #2,#5,#7 and #9 final AP Poll, the closest being 23 points. Averaged 53.2 ppg, average margin victory was 38.6. Unmatched dominance.
(Side note: The "shitty" Big 8 finished with 4 Top 10 teams.)

Both teams deserve consideration as #1. Call it a tie for me, 1A and 1B.

I feel the same way but the majority of the people that support the 1995 team weren’t born yet or young enough and didn’t witness the 71 season, so the older fan base has to explain why players like Johnny Rodgers who was one the most explosive and feared punt returner the college game ever has seen is another reason why the 71 team was rated higher than the 95 team..

You forget that not only herbstreet was a whiner Mark May was a true Nebraska hater I don’t miss that guy

these lists are so subjective and silly. here's why: the 1899 sewanee tigers went on a 5 game 6-day by-train road trip from austin to oxford. they beat texas, aTm, lsu, tulane, and ole miss by a combined score of 91-0. the team finished 12-0 outscoring opponents 322-10. i'd say that 13-man team was the greatest of all time because no one could, did or ever will duplicate that accomplishment. and yes, everything in context.
