ESPN article about Riley, Neb, and Oreg St

I agree with the article. I don't give a crap what some on here say about our talent level and the "Pelini culture" blah blah blah. Giving up 55 to Purdue was a deal breaker for me. I get that our talent is not what it once was. But Purdue?? Seriously? I know a poorly coached and mismanaged football team when I see it. Should Riley be fired? Probably not. But I would not shed a tear if he were. He won't be though so we might as well show up and not be boo birds at the games. We need recruits. But the article is correct: Riley is a nice guy but his track record is not impressive

I know it's Purdue and I know it's not a fair comparison because saban had already established himself at LSU, but he did lose to Louisiana-Monroe his first year at Bama. I am betting after that game Bama fan was feeling pretty low as well. This isn't the first time a blue blood has lost to a VASTLY inferior team.

I am still gonna say let's wait til next year. If things are still the same this time next year defending Riley becomes that much harder.

Good points. Well said

The writer makes some solid points, and I think we all have some reasonable measure of apprehension about the program's future. That being said, the writer applies a double standard to Riley, pinning the current struggles at Oregon State on him along with Nebraska's current struggles. One could also argue, using the writer's own logic, that Nebraska's struggles lie with the mismanagement of the previous coach.....but that wouldn't fit the writer's narrative, would it?

Look, I don't know if Riley's going to get it done, either. There's plenty of ammunition for both sides of the argument. At this point, we are probably all just wasting our breath.

I understand what you are saying, but let's not confuse Riley with Saban.

Precisely why I said I know it's not a fair comparison because saban already established himself at LSU. So no one does confuse him with saban. Thought I was pretty clear, but I guess not...

Riley is far from being a Blue Blood. Maybe a very pale Baby Blue

Garbage article written by some unknown hack (Ted Miller). Thanks for wasting a couple minutes for me
There will be more. And there have been similar articles written by others. The problem is that we have a bias as Nebraska fans, and the outside world is laughing at us or scratching their respective heads at this hire.

Meanwhile, many posters here are making drastic errors in logic/reasoning, and making so many excuses it's not even fathomable. All because Saban and Meyer didn't do overly well in their first gigs as HC.

I loved this article. Everything I have been saying about how Riley left the Oregon State program in disarray was verified in this article. As the article states being a nice guy is far from being a priority in becoming a successful coach. Riley has been trending downward now for sometime. Eichorst threw Riley a life ring from the mounting pressures from Beaver fans and he grabbed on with all his might.

Post above is spot on. We are the biggest laughing stock in College football. The arrogance of winning a long time ago is blinding many.

Nothing wrong with supporting Riley, but the excuses being made for him are unbelievable.

30 year head coach who coaches as if he is in 9th grade football. That's why we are pissed. At least Bo had only coached for 7 years. What's Riley's excuse?

And I will stop bagging on Riley when the so called greatest fans in college football stop bagging on the players.

Bo was right look what you guys post.

It is the ghost of mark pelini. HE contaminated and dropped bombs on the program because he could not handle it.
Punkassmarkakabo didn't know what he was getting, and didn't like what he got.
He tried to get fired.
Because he could not handle it.
It was way to big for Mark Pelini.
He is where he should be.
I hope he stays there.

Unless somebody in the BIG wants to hire him.

What Bo exposed was that the greatest fans in college football about a leaving a game early.

The fans didn't like it being called out for what they did, and got their feelings hurt. Truth hurt.

Now we are about to miss a bowl game for the first time in 7 years and then will think 9-4 next year is progress.

Fans need to look in the mirror.

Riley has coached in the NFL and he can't handle a so called toxic locker room? Just think about that for a sec.

So, you're fine with blaming the fans for Bo's profanity laced tirade? Well, that's just stupid. You've exposed yourself with this post as a self loathing Nebraska Fan. You actually believe the fan base is somehow to blame for the past, or our current 3-6 record? Insanity.

Bo isn't coaching here any more because he's an asshat. Accept it. Move on. And for Pete's sake, grow a pair and quit blaming the fan base. As any abuse counselor worth their salt will tell you, it's not your fault. It's his.

He exposed NU fans because they left their seats before halftime? Ohhhh Mark really "exposed" us fans. So much we kissed his ass right out the door...except nobody else wanted him so he had to wait until he was fired. Talk about being exposed.

He addressed that issue by pointing out that Oregon State was bad last year and expected to be bad this year (i.e. struggles are on Riley), while Nebraska was good last year and expected to finish second in the Big Ten West (i.e. the current struggles were unexpected and, hence, are on Riley)

Are you talking about the 2011 Ohio State game? If so then Bo didn't expose shit. The stadium was back to 98% full to start the second half.

Fans didn't like being called out for something that didn't happen.

There is 2% that didn't...Hope your accurate about that. Because players POV are different than ours.

I don't blame the fans for being mad. I'm just saying we got out feelings hurt. Point stands.

Saban in his first year at Alabama suspended almost his entire team - maybe he was making a point and getting control of the program if Riley had done the same thing and then lost I would be in his corner

Didn't know that... I'm sure your exaggerating a bit, entire team and all, but if he suspended a lot of starters, it would have an impact.

Shows you the stupidity of the writer. First, Nebraska wasn't good last year, don't care what the record states. Secondly, how can a team that finished third in the West last year lose it's two best players and all time leading receiver and expect to finish higher in the west than last year?

Again, the stadium was 98% right before the second half started. The other 1.5% were the student section, but the full 2% filled in just a few minutes after the 2nd half started.

I know I'm very accurate on the above because I was there and I actually paid attention to how many people were going to stick around for the 2nd half. The reason being is because we closed out the 1st half very poorly and actually A LOT of fans stepped outside the stadium after the 1st half (myself included) because how poorly we were playing and it was a feeling of "here we go again, another butt-whooping". Just because fans stepped outside didn't mean they weren't going to come back in. I feel fans just wanted to step away for a minute and in a way just get a breather away from the current situation. Or at least that's how I felt.

I really don't remember hearing or reading about any players complaining about the fans that game. Just Bo. But if the players did have that POV it's only because Bo was a crybaby about the game for no reason and was totally delusional about the fans for that game.

Maybe you're right about the fans getting their feelings hurt, but it doesn't justify Bo's comments as being legit therefore Bo was wrong.

I'm sorry, but imo your point doesn't stand. It would only stand if Bo was correct about exposing us fans about not showing up for the 2nd half of that game. Bo was fos and didn't expose shit.

Oh because maybe Wi lost its best player and coach also - Minn had a very tough schedule and Iowa showed no reason to think they were going to be good along with NW

NU should have been one of the favorites to start the year and was

Are you going to still be writing about Bo and what did or did not happen at a game he coached when Riley is drinking a cup of hot cocoa on his deck at his beach house on the Oregon Coast? Well that is my dream. Not your writing, but Riley out of Lincoln.

You talking about Wisconsin, the school that beat Nebraska like a rented mule last year and Minnesota, another team that took it to Nebraska....gotcha

By that logic we should have finished last in 2010 after losing Suh, one of the best players of all time. Yet we still won the division and finished with the exact same record.

I'm not the one who brought up Bo in the first place.

My comments have nothing to do with Riley. But, if people keep incorrectly bringing up the 2011 Ohio St game, Bo and the fans then I probably will keep correcting those people about that game. Funny though, no matter how many times that situation is explained correctly the Bolievers still try to use that game against Nebraska fans and say, "see Bo was right."

For me it's more we prefer to call our players bums. than admit the coach is bum.
