Had an interesting conversation with some Husker fans in the Atlanta airport the other day. 2 out of the 3 would like to see the band no longer involved at the games. Thoughts?

The band is what separates College Football from the NFL. The fight song is the passion that the NFL can not duplicate. One of the bigger reasons why I have always liked college football more than the pros

I think they should. GO BIG RED...GO BIG RED...GO BIG RED...

It is fun, it is cool.

I'm glad that 2 out of 3 Husker fans at the Atlanta airport have no say in this.
They were younger, so I get it and I see their side. It is fun discussion though and its always interesting to hear a different perspective. I had the same view when I was at UNL, but as I got older, my opinion changed.

Eliminate "the pride of all Nebraska"? Sacrilege! When we joined the B1G they needed to step up their game, which they did, but I doubt the size of our band and show content will ever match tOSU, PSU, etc. Which is OK.

Does anyone know of one University that doesn’t have a band for football games?

They play before the game There is no place like Nebraska, They call him Mr Touch down, fight song for the school we‘re playing and Hail Varsity..

Why does any of that need changing?
Colorado this year …. Band is gone.

Pleasantly surprised some bean counter hasn't added up all the revenue that would be created by revoking the seats set aside for the band that could be sold to the public. That would be such a B1G thing to do.
I think they have. Band numbers aren't as many as 40 years ago

would'nt seem the same without the band...we are keeping the band together.
I don't think they need to get crazy with it like a mich...but after touchdowns I need to be hearing the band..

I tend to agree with you here. Change it up and try to do some fun things. I don't need Mr. Touchdown USA all of the time.
like the band better than that abortion of a song they're trying to force on us, the Nebraska medley or whatever the hell it is...

Do these “fans” also want to get rid of balloon release, fly over & national anthem, tunnel walk… maybe also cancel Christmas ?

It's funny as we did talk about the tunnel walk. Similar to a lot of younger folks, but they want the song changed which in the past has been talked about a lot of here. I love the tunnel walk, but sometimes change is really good. This just isn't an NU problem, but some of the music choices in stadiums are too dated. Black and Black and Sirius are staples at NU in my opinion, but I think we could modernize or create a better mashup for the night games "red burns brighter" instead of Thunderstruck, Smells like Teen Spirit, Etc. It's fun conversation at a bar when on a layover.

I love the band perfomance before the game(which is the same all the time). Not really a fan when they try things at halftime, though.

When I was a kid, I thought the second verse of the National Anthem was Hail Varsity.
I agree the halftime shows haven't been that great. I suppose it's like a sitcom. Gets hard to write new material and then show gets weird eventually

Absolutely buuuuuuuut they need a total revamp of their music. It's the same thing every game in game and it's super stale
100 percent. Its the same tired crap every year. OSU is innovative. NU could learn a thing or two.

The CMB has had the same leadership for 20+ years. They prioritize exposing the students to a variety of different genres, highlighting historical figures in music, and so on, over writing "crowd-pleasing" shows week-to-week. Generally there will be a couple of "crowd-pleaser" pop culture shows, a couple of shows focused on some musical genre or concept that is demanding of the students from a technical standpoint, and a couple of celebrations of the 100th anniversary of some old composer, a famous musical era, or something like that. Then you have a patriotic halftime show each year to round it out. People can agree or disagree with that philosophy. I would say they also emphasize the quality of the musical performance over flashy visuals (whether that be precision formations like you might see from Texas A&M or the moving pictures OSU is famous for). Again, you can agree or disagree with that.

This isn't really accurate. Nebraska and OSUs bands are similar to most college bands (leaving aside HBCU-style show bands and military-styled bands such as the aforementioned aTm) in maintaining a relatively static pregame show year-to-year and then developing a new halftime show for each home game. OSU's band is rightly famous for their visuals. The CMB won't do stuff like that except rarely given the philosophies I noted earlier.

I've always thought when they play Hey Baby (I wanna know) and the band nerds all sing the chorus it's pretty cringe but aside from that, the marching band needs to refuse to yield

At halftime it’s time to go take a leak don’t see much of the performance anyway.
Judging by the play of the football team in recent years, here are some new songs the marching band should play:

Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?
Heartbreak Hotel
Valley of Pain
The Tracks of my Tears
How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?
Tangled up in Blue
Cry Me a River

Except osu imo is half again as big. NU marching band gets little respect from b1g which I don't like. Look at their marching band commercial. I do think the Indiana part is funny with the lip wrinkling drummer.

I LOVE the marching band. Started going to games in 5th grade in the 70s . I used to usher there and got to watch them practice before games. I'm still in line when gates open because I like watching the orchestration of putting on a game. I give to the band fund every year. I just feel band is and has been slipping unfortunately 😕
