ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions are expected to be without their top running back, Ameer Abdullah, for the rest of spring workouts after he had surgery in January.

Abdullah had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder, according to a source close to the situation, and is expected to be back by the start of training camp this summer.
Lions coach Jim Caldwell confirmed Abdullah had surgery but declined to give specifics, including if Abdullah was playing with the injury the entire season.

He also said "we'll see" when he expects Abdullah to return.

"He's recovering nicely," Caldwell said.

The Lions' second-round pick in 2015, Abdullah ended up leading Detroit in rushing last season with 597 yards and was the team's primary kick returner.

He did not practice at the team's first open OTA on Thursday.

With Abdullah out, Stevan Ridley, Zach Zenner and Theo Riddick are expected to see even more work.

The news was first reported by the Detroit Free Press.

Anybody know much about Detroit's OL? From what I saw last year, it wasn't so hot. With a decent OL, AA could become a star.

They should be better. The Lions have drafted OL heavily over the last few years and I hope it starts to pan out.

They drafted Decker (OT from Ohio State) in the 1st round this year. He will probably start out at RT. And they drafted a center from Michigan (Glasgow) in the 3rd round this year.

Last year they drafted Laken Thomlinson in the 1st round (guard from Duke). In 2014, they got a G/C in the 3rd (Swanson). In 2013, they grabbed Warford (guard) in the 3rd and in 2012 they got Reiff in the first.

The biggest issue they will have is that they will have Reiff playing LT. He would be much better at RT. The middle of the line should be strong and I have high hopes for Decker at RT. I am not sure if he can be a LT in the NFL.

Long story short, AA should have a better line in front of him with Thomlinson getting a year under his belt (he started to play better towards the end of the year) and with the new OL coach that took over halfway through last year.

Watching his first NFL TD live... Dude has skills. Let's get healthy and put em on display.
