Between 2011-2020 Recruiting classes, only Alabama and Nebraska have topped their current respective division every single time.
I've broken down Rivals Team Rankings, RPI, and Salary into Current Divisional and Current Conference rankings for all P5 teams in an attempt to quantify some of the attributes of the Nebraska head coaching position. Where we rank divisionally matters more than conference or national because it necessarily makes up 50% of our regular season schedule. Conference matters more than national because it necessarily makes up 25% of our regular season schedule (while we typically play obviously disadvantaged FCS/G5 schools OOC), although Big Ten scheduling makes crossovers not quite an apples to apples comparison.
Below are divisional and conference statistics on Team Rivals rankings. AVG is the average over the timespan, AVGRK is the average recruiting class rank, year by year, among divisional and conference peers in their respective charts. Between 2011-2020 Recruiting classes, only Alabama and Nebraska have topped their current respective division every single time. Surprisingly, on a conference level Nebraska edges out Penn State due to capturing a portion of their death penalty. Conclusion: Recruiting, relative to our known schedule, advantages Nebraska in a way that recruiting hotbeds aren't. This particular advantage has held through three coaching regimes.
Below are divisional and conference statistics on RPI. Nebraska sits in the second easiest division in the P5 according to RPI. Even taking Nebraska's drag on the divisions RPI out, the Big Ten West still sits second to last at 26.16. Conclusion: This advantages Nebraska as a job destination where we're not guaranteed to play juggernauts in our necessary divisional games.
Below are divisional and conference statistics on Salaries for 2021. HC is the Head Coaches Salary, HCAC is the head coaches salary + all Assistant Coaches. The data is courtesy of USAtoday via waybackmachine. Nebraska currently lags Iowa divisionally in published total coach salaries, and is likely 6th in conference ("likely" due to Penn States decision to only submit Brent Pry's salary). Data is incomplete for: Baylor, BC, Duke, Miami, NW, ND, Penn State, Pitt, USC, Stanford, Syracuse, TCU, Vanderbilt, VT, and Wake Forest due to lack of disclosures to USAtoday, all others have published data for all coaches. Conclusion: At 20th in the national HCAC coaches pay, we have a slight advantage as a desirable coaching destination, however, we need to dish out for these new assistant coaches.
