Don't get me wrong, I like getting a late recruit and he has great potential but I don't like this trade. This is what happens when you play for championships. Kids dream about playing at your school. We don't get this luxury anymore.

We can cast a bit stronger net competing for titles regularly, but unless something changes, kids who grow up in Louisiana, Bama, Oklahoma, etc are still likely to have those local schools be their dream schools.

It wasn't as big a deal back in the day because a third of our roster was from in-state, and quite a bit more was from an area in the surrounding region that may as well been local.

If I'm not mistaken, we ended up taking Thomas Brown late in the process as a linebacker recruit. That didn't turn out to be such a good trade. It's stuff like this that left us with no linebacker depth.

Anyone know if Thomas Brown ever did anything in major college football after he left? Did he go JUCO? Or transfer?

Edit: I looked him up. He went JUCO. Signed with Memphis. Didn't qualify.

Agreed. If we could make a run and be taken seriously, recruiting would benefit greatly imo.

He went to JUCO. Then signed with Memphis but didn't qualify. Not sure what happened to him since.

In his defense, he is from La.

Thomas Brown, Jarad Afalava, and Jaevon Walton all have a similar story:

- They were once big time prospects as a Sophomores. They were on the verge of becoming National recruits. However, as schools like USC, Bama, and LSU began to investigate these kids, they learned each one of them had BAD reputations. There were allegations out of Utah that Afalava's family had ties to a significant Polynesian gang.

The only reason Bo ever got involved with these kids was because he needed talent and couldn't consistently recruit talent with the necessary character needed at Nebraska. You can probably add Leroy Alexander and Avery Moss to this list. Sometimes lesser ranked recruits with weaker offer sheets are in that place because of their character scaring teams away.

Interestingly enough, I don't think Riley will have need to take those chances.

Will add that it seems that every year we would sign talented kids that were high academic risks that other programs backed off for equally talented recruits that were sure qualifiers.

Do we have any recruits this year that are academic risks?

Actually, the article says he only started one game in his first three seasons. He finally got his opportunity as a senior and really made an impact.

Riley I believe mentioned once that they ran in to trouble at OSU exactly because they took some risks on kids in order to get the kind of talent he needed there. He then went on to make your exact point that with NU's reputation and resources he didn't think he would have to do that. IMO seeing some of the kids they were able to recruit this cycle he has proven this to be true.
