Dantonio has circled the Nebraska game

The Huskers were a thorn in MSU's side under Pelini. Dantonio is placing a special importance on the Nebraska game this year. If the Huskers win, it will be against a team of raging maniacal beasts. I'm looking forward to the challenge.

We embrace the challenge.

Hmmm...I wouldn't call going 2-2 against a team as a thorn in the side. Sounds like two pretty evenly matched teams. Also didn't read or hear anything about Dantonio saying the Nebraska game was circled. Maybe I missed it...if so someone please enlighten me. I did read TA's and Nate Gerry's comments from BIG media day. But no biggie, that's to be expected when a team has beat you the last two times.

Won`t need much special attention for this game. MSU is the much better team. I just pray neb. keeps it close, which I think we will under coach riley

A much better team? That's up for debate, especially because we have no idea how we will look under Riley. Like someone pointed out, we are 2-2 against them.

Like people said we went 2-2 so far with Sparty and that was with a clown as our head coach.
I would go as far as to say that talent wise across the board we are pretty even. Big difference is Nebraska had a coach that couldn't mentally prepare their team week in and week out. Left the team open for upsets and quitting at the first signs of adversity.

Hopefully Nebraska had that figured out now.

Interesting he doesn't circle the Michigan game, oh well, they are ranked #5 and I like our chances to win, IMHO. People will be surprised this year.

But they aren't playing the basketball team. They will play the football team. Toss up to me; depends more on how quickly we have adapted to our new coaches. Never drink green lolled; fogs the mind; red is good for circulation.

I saw Dantonio's calendar. He does have the NU MSU date circled and there's a note underneath the circle. The note says "MUST GET RUNZA, NOT THE CHEESE ONE, AND SOME ONION RINGS TOO".
It says in post script : cut in small pieces in case N receiver doesn't drop the pas in the end zone this time.

MSU ranked #5, NEB unranked. And you`re going to say they are not the much better team? RollingLaugh

Exactly what I am saying. It's a 2-2 series. There is no real edge in players, but MSU has had a better coach. We will see if that gap narrows but to think MSU is much better than Nebraska is laughable.

I have a love/hate relationship with MSU, but their fans really riding high and living in the clouds. Laughing

They are going to be tough this season, but Nebraska seems to play them well. Plus its in Lincoln.

How many trolls can post in one very short thread?

Just my opinion. Circling a game is for teams that are bad, really bad. A coach for a really bad team circles a game against a good team that will be played late in the year. It's an attempt to keep the really bad team motivated. As losses keep on coming, the coach says "don't worry about these losses, we are focusing all our efforts on this one (circled) team".

I've seen Dantonio in a number of interviews. He has always shifted the focus of any questions related to games further down the schedule to whoever MSU is playing this week.

Not necessarily. As steady as Dantonio appears, he still places special importance on certain games. Even when Michigan was good 10 years ago, Dantonio would circle that game because he knew the importance of dominating in-state recruiting.

No other school has done as well against MSU as Nebraska has (Ohio State is also 2-2). I'd be surprised if he's not giving this year's road game in Lincoln some added significance.

I think their fans should be riding high. They are playing good football and have been on the cusp. It's definitely good to be an MSU fan right now.

Sorry, I'm not buying MSU as a "mainstay" of college football. They are on the crest of the sine wave right now.

Never said they were going to be a mainstay, but at the current time they should be riding high. They have had back to back stellar seasons and are coming in with a preason ranking of #5 with a few big games right away to only move them up. It's why they play the game, but if I was an MSU person right now I would be riding high. There aren't many teams that have had more success recently.

Yep good to be a Sparty right now. 11 win seasons in 4 of the last 5 years. We've certainly had to stomach enough mediocrity to appreciate the recent success.

So when are you predicting MSU to fall back to the pack?
Ok, I'm going to chime in.......Frankly, this game scares me and I have no problem saying that some MSU fans need to take a step back as some are acting like Michigan fans.
As a guy who is in their mid 50''s, I remember Nebraska beating the hell out of teams and it's one program that didn't win with great recruiting classes, but they just beat teams up. This program deserves respect.
Nebraska leads 7-2 over MSU
Nebraska has spent 70 weeks ranked #1 which is #7 All-Time. MSU has spent 29 weeks at #1 which is #13 All-Time.

National Championships- Nebraska has 5 and MSU has 4.

We need to show more respect!

I don't think the MSU folks show too much lack of respect. Most of your folks that come over here just talk football, and have some solid ground to stand on. Right now MSU has "scoreboard" over NU for the last couple of seasons, but at the end of the day I don't think NU is too far off. I hope Mike Rile can help with the coaching edge you guys have had for awhile now. Should be good games in the future, and I think Sparty has some staying power. The Big 10 on the whole is on the up and up. Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska, and maybe a few others all have the potential to be pretty damn good in the near future. Should be a lot of fun games in the times ahead.

None of us really represent any thing but ourselves. I'm a Spartan lurker and have great respect for NU's football Cornhuskers. However, there are some Spartan posters who like to stir the pot, just like any fan base. They do not represent me, nor Michigan State University, just themselves.

As to circled games for MSU:

1. WMU because it kicks off the season.

2. Oregon because they are good, the nation will be watching, and it's a payback game.

3. Michigan because no true Spartan likes the Arrogant Asses.

As of now though, the MSU v. NU game is not circled in my mind. It's just to far into the season to be some sort of milestone event. Who knows what will transpire before then? If the Spartans are looking ahead though, they just might get some losses that they don't want. MSU has a bye week before visiting Lincoln in November, so Coach D will have plenty of time to fire up the team at that point.

Anyway, just my thoughts.

Good luck on your season, Huskers. Hopefully, when the matchup does roll around we'll both be playing for something that could be great.

Good luck to you guys as well, Richie! Thanks for the friendly post. I enjoy watching the NU-MSU tumbles.

Great post. I have nothing but respect for your program, always have. Most posters from MSU are great. Unfortunately you have one that comes
here and leaves a bad impression of MSU fans every time he opens his mouth. Good luck to you guys.

Probably in 2-3 years.
You could be right. But as of now there's no evidence to really support that. Dantonio has had high level success (11 win seasons) with essential two different group of players and recruiting has improved since then. He (and staff) has been a very good job of developing and maximizing talent. Now conventional thinking for some is that the combination of Harbaugh, PSU returning to full scholarships + strong recruiting, plus losing Narduzzi with knock MSU down to 4th in the east. We shall see.
