Danny Langs, Oregon guy

He's an analyst with the Oregon Ducks

Danny better be looking for a better home. I am betting Mario Cristobal is not the answer to ending the Ducks slide to being mediocre. The Ducks looked terrible against a good but not great Boise State team in their bowl game. Besides having concerns about Cristobal, I wonder how DC Jm Leavitt, the strongest assistant on the staff will get along sharing the D with new Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Line Coach, Joe Salave'a. Uncle Phil's Nike money enabled Cristobal to hire Salave'a away from the WSU Cougs. Salave's departure is going to hurt the Cougs' recruiting and only help the Ducks as I am sure he will just move his Samoan pipeline a little south of Pullman to Eugene. So who is in charge of the D? The DC Leavitt or the Assistant Head Coach Saleve'a?

Danny appears to have a history of attaching himself to losers.

This is just a quick stop, grabbing a paycheck while still getting paid from NU, until the good ole boy system kicks into higher gear. Next year he will be the OC at Utah State or something like that.

If Riley can get big $$$ from Nebraska for pretending to work, why not Langsdorf?

I don't...but generally in the coaching community, at that level, you are not filling out an application and waiting for a call...they are calling you if they have an opening if you are "good" at what you do.
I agree with this. But also give it at least a year or two to see what happens with these coaches. What if Langs lands a job as Oregon's OC next year? Do our thoughts on Langs now change and it now means he was a good hire at Nebraska?

Let's take a look at where some of Riley's staff landed:

Offense
Mike Riley(HC):
Oregon State AHC/TE coach(making $50k per year)
Danny Langsdorf(OC & QB): Analyst at Oregon
Reggie Davis(RB): Unsure where he landed
Keith Williams(WR): Training players at Speedway in Lincoln
Cav(OL): Syracuse OL Coach(how the hell he found another job I will never know)
Defense
Bob Diaco(DC):
Analyst at OU
Trent Bray(LB): Oregon State LB coach
Scott Booker(Safeties and special teams): Miami(OH) WR coach
Donte Williams(CB): Oregon OLB coach
John Parrella(DL): I don't think he landed anywhere

Billy Devaney(director of player personnel): GM of Alliance of American Football(????)
Mark Phillip(Strength and Conditioning): USC Strength and conditioning coach
Tavita Thompson(GA for TE's): Central Michigan TE coach

I don't follow staff rules closely, but it seems like the "analyst" position is a new one and a "workaround" to getting more coaches in your room. Has NU ever exploited that position to the degree other programs have/do?

You should listen to Chris Weber's interview with Nick Bahe about Mark Phillips.

Sounds like Chris had some accountability and put in his work...

Might have spoke prematurely, but seems like not everyone was working as hard as Chris Webber.

Oregon fans are fickle. Kelly ruined them for a generation. Helfrich, who got them in the CFP one of the 4 years he coached, was fired. The rumblings in the Oregonian (the state's largest paper) were hilarious after some of the losses last year in Taggart's first season. How long do they support Cristobal?

Not really for me, I don't care if he gets a great job or a lame one.

My opinion was beginning to be formed when Langs ran a Jamal Turner jet sweep for a 2-yard loss on 3rd and 3 with 1:25 left in the BYU game in 2015. This was right after Cross ran for 2 yards on first down and Wilbon ran for 5 on second. NU averaged 3.4 per rush in that game. Brown missed the 41 yard FG on fourth down and we all know what happened after that.

My final opinion was cemented when with a 7 point lead he ran a pass play on first down on Northwestern's 19 with under six minutes in the game, which was intercepted. I think NW had two timeouts at the time. Even a sandlot coach knows in that situation you run it three times, the third time ending between the hashes for at worse, a 34-yard FG from your senior kicker. That makes NW either use two timeouts and has less than 5 minutes on the clock when the FG attempt is made, or NW has two timeouts and around 3 minutes when the FG is kicked. I'm assuming Brown kicks it to go up 10. Or maybe you make a first down running and burn the clock down to a minute and make the FG easier. Or, maybe you score a TD by running. You don't let the QB audible under any circumstances in that situation if that is what Lee did.

It is easy to sit in an arm chair and second guess the OC. But the BYU blunder was due to trying to be cute while not paying attention to the percentages. The Northwestern disaster was so un-fundamental and mind boggling, I still can't comprehend it six months later.

Pretty good move for him, but man, will be interesting to see what USC looks like in a couple years. UCLA will probably rule la.
In his defense I heard from a reliable source that MR made parts of offseason workouts truly optional.
Tough to get gains.

Great post... the Jamal Turner jet sweep BYU play stuck in my craw as well. I was at the NW game this year and that interception prevented us from securing the victory. The team's psyche was finished and no one came to play the next week against Minnesota.

Don't forget the Illinois game in 2015 where we threw it 35+ times in a wind storm when the running game was working well. Then we throw a pass on third down when a running play would have almost totally run the clock out. Also don't forget the Purdue game with Fyfe where we throw it 50 times. Also don't forget the Wisconsin game where one first down wins the game and we go run up the middle run up the middle run up the middle punt. sigh.

I was there that night in the North Endzone. I saw the outcome coming a mile a way. Once it went into OT, we exited the stadium

Parella was coaching D linemen at some type of an off season camp this past summer I thought. I'm really kind of suprised he didn't land somewhere. The guy was in fact a good recruiter and our struggles can hardly be laid at his feet.

Exactly. Like I say, every fan in America sits in his arm chair and hates on his head coach and OC from time to time. It is our birthright and is what makes America great. But hating on the HC and OC because they didn't call the play you would have is one thing. Sitting there speechless with both arms in the air because what the offense is doing borders on total incompetence is a total nuther.

The guy came into a no win situation.... he got screwed. My favorite “he was told (by Diaco) to have his Dline bullrush and raise hands”- Charlie McBride
