DaiShon Neal as an OT?

Question for those with a higher football IQ, i.e. just about everyone. Would it make sense for DaiShon Neal to move to OT now that we have switched to a 3-4? We are relatively thin there and could use an athletic OT.

I honestly doubt he'll ever work or play hard enough to be a real guy at Nebraska, regardless of position. He didn't play hard in high school. Hope I'm way wrong.

You still need DEs with length in the 3-4, and he fits that bill. Probably needs to add a few more pounds though.

I think he's a better fit as a 3-4 defensive end than he was anywhere in the 4-3. His size is ideal. Let's see how he does this spring.

This article would not back up the theory he is a good fit in this D according to body make up. I don't see anything that would convince me he is a legitimate candidate for the end in this D. The three down linemen will be most likely come from our current crop of interior D linemen.

The next suggestion is to stand the former D ends up in the OLB position. I certainly don't see that happening with Freedom and Neal.

I agreed until Riley said right after Diaco was hired that he had previously thought that Freedom would be a good OLB in a 3-4. It blew me away because I disagreed, but I have very little knowledge on these things, but some posters said it before Riley did though.

If Neal was lazy in high school, I wish the coaches would have known it and not even offered (of course many would have been mad that they didn't go after the "best" in-state recruits of course).

Some players had no drive or initiative until their junior or senior year and it clicks in their mind that their football career is about over and they finally decide to push themselves. Let's hope he will start showing some initiative and determination... otherwise lets act like Bama and kick him off the team :D muhahahaha lol

I would be willing to bet that if he were available this year, he may not have been a priority like he was the first year. But keep in mind, the coaches couldn't afford to be choosy their first year here.

At the same time, it's hard to say to someone who is talented to play for someone else because of work ethic. Who knows what it will be like in college? Sometimes, you have to take that chance and sign the kid and hope for the best. Who else were we in on Riley's first year? I feel like we had to take him...

Let's pump the brakes a bit. Neal is only going to be a redshirt Sophmore this fall.

From Huskers.com

"2016 OutlookOmaha Central High School product DaiShon Neal is part of a collection of young talent on the defensive line that will be called on to compete for playing time in 2016. The 6-7, 270-pound Neal missed much of last fall because of injury, but put in a strong offseason in the weight room and a solid spring practice session, putting him in contention for playing time as a redshirt freshman. Neal worked for much of the spring with the second defensive line group.

2015 (Redshirt)Neal sat out the season as a redshirt. He was sidelined for much of the season by a leg injury."

I don't see Freedom as an OLB either, but who knows. Maybe his coverage skills are better than we thought. He would appear to be a 'tweener' for the 3-4 and might have to add some pounds to be a DE.

When they called Banker a "reasonably decent Defensive Coordinator" I had to chuckle.

In the 3-4s I've seen, they still have length at the DE position, because they still have to keep OTs hands from getting to their body. They are just heavier than in the 4-3 and don't require as much edge speed. But if Neal lacks motivation all bets are already off. But he has a good frame for a DE in either the 4-3 or 3-4. And I highly doubt he is a candidate for an OLB position because he is too big to have decent coverage skills.

Neal committed to the previous staff in April of 2014.

Yes but we had to woo him to keep him. I think Michigan made a late push for him and if the recruiter hadn't screwed up royally by telling him his grades wouldn't be good enough (or something like that) it felt like he was going to flip to Michigan.

The coaches wanted him. If they didn't, they would have told him to accept the Michigan offer.

Alabama did too.

Through all the reading and articles and comments; I have picked up an underlying thread. That our new DC and also amongst the other coaches are among the best for evaluating what position a player should play, and forming a plan to get him there. We have Boyd and a potentially revolutionary research team in place. I wonder if we aren't becoming more like the Patriots, become a great team member and follow the plan / or we can help you find that best alternative you seem to desire. GBR. Glad he is here and hoping he maximizes.

Interesting to know that Neal was coveted by comparable programs, with an offer list including Iowa, Michigan, OU, and Oregon. But quite frankly, the vibe on this board has ranged from meh to negative. The early injury is mitigating. It would be great if he stepped up his game, as he is a big kid at 6-7.

But of course thanks to the crack squad of F-ups at Yahoo headquarters, we don't have a depth chart or a sortable roster that has their Rivals rating attached to their profile. Nothing, nada, zilch...other than their profile included in the recruiting class they came in with. In this case, 3 classes ago. Thanks Yahoo, you monumental failures.

So Daishon Neal is Actually a Five-Star Recruit or Close
OMAHA — After Daishon Neal officially chose Nebraska over Michigan, Oregon, Oklahoma, Iowa and a host of late suitors, Neal got a phone call from a number of schools trying to flip him at the last minute, including one from Alabama.

“My dad kept me level-headed,” Neal said Thursday in Omaha. “I had a lot of big schools that people didn’t know about that tried to get me to switch the last couple seconds. The biggest one was Alabama. My dad talked to me, and I said, ‘no, I’m tired of this process’ and I was done with it and I’m happy to be a Husker. He kept me in my place and we finished the process right then and there.”

I'm not sure why you attached a story on Neal to my rant about Yahoo getting rid of many of the best features of this board. The story has nothing to do with these features.

Removing these features is one reason why I won't become a Premium member again. If Yahoo wants to dramatically diminish the quality of their board, they shouldn't be rewarded for it.

Mods, if you want to share my posts with Yahoo, feel free to do so. Someone needs to let them know that screwing up is costing them dough.

To help out with additional info that's all. Because you are right about yahoo.

Thanks man. I miss being able to go to our depth chart and compare star ratings of our starters vs teams we play. It was fun to compare talent. At least the talent coming into the program. And just being able to get a snapshot of our depth chart.
