“Following just the third year of the women’s soccer program at the University of Nebraska, head coach John Walker was named the National Coach of the Year. He guided the Huskers to 23 straight victories and an appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals.
“Walker led Nebraska to 14-4 and 10-8 in the program’s first two seasons as an independent in 1994 and 1995 before joining the Big 12 in 1996. That year, the Huskers finished the regular season 21-0, won the Big 12 to nab the league’s automatic NCAA Tournament berth, beat Minnesota (3-2 in double OT) and Duke (3-0) before losing to Portland (1-0) in the Elite Eight.”
