It may be seasonal to some degree which puts it in the realm of being worse during school session. The Lambda variant coming out of South America does concern me in that the vaccine offers virtually zero protection against it. One of the problems with making such a specific mRNA vaccine against so few antigens is that it doesn't offer very good protection against widely different mutations. The media is fear mongering the hell out of it, but I belive its seasonal and each area will see an increase which will then subside. If everyone acted like they did in 2018 most wouldn't even notice.
IMO, this Corona virus is not behaving like a naturally occurring CV we have seen in domestic animals over the past 40 years. It seems to be mutating more rapidly to similarly pathogenic forms. I remain concerned that Wuhan did something to the virus to enhance it's ability to persist in the population. We need to be working rapidly to include the Lambda strain in the vaccine to protect immunocompromised people.
I'm reading that natural immunity from infection with the original strain or Delta strain does seem to confer immunity to Lambda. That's a big deal for football. If we're going to continue testing protocols we could have a lot of disruption to play. IMO, we need to let the Delta strain run through our population pretty quickly before we'll get to a situation where Lambda isn't a factor.
