Are we all doomed?
My step son is a parasitologist in New York. He told me last night that a friend of his who is a Harvard scientist predicted 10 million will die from this virus world wide. It doesn't help that the Orange Buffoon fired the entire pandemic system that Obama had set up for exactly such a circumstance as is happening. The Dear Leader killed it because Obama created it, and people will die unnecessarily because of it. These are facts, but facts are a nuisance here in Trumpanzee country.

Obama was a complete idiot who did untold damage to this country internally as well as externally. You should be grateful that someone who actually knows what they are doing is in the White House and will be re-elected for another term. This virus is not Trumps fault, it's been mismanaged by both communist and socialist countries before it arrived here. The system you're backing is what allowed this mess out of the lab in the first place.

Well if this country sucks like your implying feel free to move to Cuba or Venezuela, I hear they have great socialized health care. I find it very interesting all these countries that are having the biggest issue all have government run health care!!!!

How about every other advanced nation on earth that has universal health care, except one? Who implied this country sucks? You said that, not me. Learn to read.

You need to go on the road with that stand up routine. Trump knows what he is doing? You mean he's bankrupting the country? Well, ok, there is one thing he knows.

Societies are simple...

Food:check...largest tracks arable land on the planet
Trade routes check: most warm water seaports in the world
Peace check: no wars fought on the soil in 160 years
Resources check: largest coal deposits, and plentiful oil, massive amounts of mineral wealth
Largest river transport: North south river transport is most efficient in the world
cheap labor: ...last to stop the use of slaves and still relies heavily on cheap immigrant labor..and have for our entire history. 9/10 new business are started by 1st generation immigrants..even in 2020!

Even with all of this...we are the 2nd fattest nation in the world...we score 30th on standardized test scores across the world...haven't won a major war in 85 years...don't dominate the olympics...we do not dominate in innovation or technological advancement. Baxter summed it up...we are fat, stupid, ignorant, but have been given the best possible situation of any person on the planet and yet we aren't exceptional at anything. Can you imagine if Japan or Germany spent 1 trillion a year on military?

Does Cuba or Venezuela has the fortune of any of these benefits, let alone all of these? Don't forget that our super status also allowed us to manipulate Cuba and Venezuela to benefit america...so much so that their moderate governments were overthrown and replaced with socialists. Despite the appearances Venezuela and Cuba are nationalist states, they use socialist elements...but ultimately their goal is to limit foreign influence. The only reason they have done this is because of our influence.

If NASA had a 1T per year budget we'd have a colony on Mars by now.

Annually dingle, like each year!

CDC estimates that influenza has resulted in between 9 million – 45 million illnesses, between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 61,000 deaths annually since 2010.
 Man I have to wear my cheaters when I read the freaking articles. Thanks for the correction.....:oops::oops: . My personal belief is that this virus will become endemic and will be something that will be included in the future in flu vaccination protocols. That scenario is very common in other mammalian corona viruses and with COVID-19 they're already seeing recovered humans shedding virus intermittently for weeks post infection. I find the CDC's flu numbers hard to believe but whatever. In my state, we've had just a couple of flu deaths reported so far this season and they made the news.

Sucks to get old, doesn't it. Winking As I'm in the high risk category (ie. OLD) I'm going to continue to stay informed and try to stay as healthy as possible, esp. since I'll be traveling soon. (time to hit the Emergen C). But for tonight it's time to kick back, drink a hard cider, watch the Seattle Sounders and wish I was at Century Link. Oh yeah, and celebrate my wedding anniversary. Good discussion.

Theres numbers, other numbers, and out right get the click hyper lies.
250 million died from....
I know, that getting this virus is 30 times more deadly than the common flu.
So,if only 3% of the people who had the common flu get this, the same number of deaths are to be expected.
The lying dormant,no symptoms thing is our current biggest concern, then an anti viral solution, and build up of anti bodies in the masses.

The flu kills 7.5% of people who are hospitalized. Covid doesn't kill at a higher rate...we just do not have infection models to predict how many are asymptomatic or have extremely mild symptoms. An infection can vary depending on many factors including a being exhausted, malnourished, getting a massive viral load, compromised from another infection, genetics, and possible exposure to unidentified coronaviruses. There are obviously more than three historical coronaviruses. It will be interesting to see the ethnic breakdown, if there are regions that have genetic resistance like with influenza...ie...europeans being so fricken dirty historically that they have many built in resistances. Other people living with much more space and in more isolated areas have almost no immunity to mutated influenza.

False story

This thing looks like it could be burning itself out. Active cases peaked at 58,000 on Feb 17. It has decreased every day since and is now at 43,000. Those recovered are starting to outpace the newly infected. That even included the outbreak numbers in Italy and South Korea.

It's just getting started elsewhere. The overall numbers are HEAVILY weighted towards China. It went from about 30 to 2000 in Korea in just over a week.

Good grief......this has to be one of the most idiotic posts I've ever read! RollingLaugh

I do wonder about its ability to sustain once it gets out of cities of 11 million...it is almost impossible to imagine the population density of Wuhan...the rest of china...and the parts of korea it has clustered in...then you have a few cruise ships which are known as the worst petri dishes for infectious disease. One chinese official said it hit a literally the worst place at the worst time on the planet...one of the most densely population areas, with a large elderly population, with terrible respiratory health, during the time of year with the most travel. It had its best chance at a wild start. There are so many americans that were exposed to it on planes in January that did not lead to an outbreak...maybe random luck, maybe it is a hygiene or space component. The hope is it will find a dead end in less populated areas as it encounters more humid weather during the spring months. And we will have a vaccine or better treatments for next fall.

The only way 10 million die is if most of the world gets infected. The death rate is less than 1% and it is almost entirely elderly. As for the rest of your post.....

I work with someone who has family in China and are kinda connected to people with influence and she swears the Chinese govt was behind this. Either way hope it get under control. If it screws up the Olympics that will be no good

Why don't you go ahead and detail the "untold damage" that Obama did to the country. We'll wait..

Economic growth for record quarters. Making healthcare available for all. He was never impeached either. Actually was never indicted in 2 terms. And neither were any of his associates.

Stop talking out of your ass!! The mortality rate for the cases that have run their course is currently at 7%. That is compared to .1 % for the typical flu.

The mortality rate will continue to come down, because people will seek healthcare much earlier, but I doubt the mortality rate will ever get down to 1%.

For such a self appointed expert, you sure say some wildly innacurate things.

If you're referring to Dinglefritz, I don't know what the exact numbers are that are being disputed, but if you take the numbers of deaths divided by the number of cases of the flu in those charts, you'll see that number represents a mortality rate that hovers around that .1 % that both Dingle and myself have cited. As it stands right now, the mortality rate of those cases that have run their course, the mortality rate at the Coronavirus is down to 7%, which is still 70 times that of the typical flu.

The point is...that the Coronavirus has a very long incubation period, and we don't have antibodies, since it is a novel virus. This means that it has a great likelihood to spread.

Now...if we can stay on top of it, we might be OK. But if it gets started in the U.S. and ends up spreading like the typical flu, which it has the capability to do, we are in big trouble. I'm hopeful we can contain it, but most experts say it's not a matter of 'if' but 'when' it spreads. I hope they are wrong.

If indeed Trump did gut this department (which I don't know), you can bet that if this gets bad, he is going to take the blame right between the eyes.

From Fortune magazine..

Sigh..

"The Trump administration recently requested $2.5 billion in emergency funds to prepare the U.S. for a possible widespread outbreak of coronavirus. Critics, though, are pointing out that money might not be necessary if the administration hadn’t spent the past two years largely dismantling government units that were designed to protect against pandemics."

Yes, let's politicize a virus released from China. Sounds like fun times.

Like they were going to let a perfectly good tragedy go to waste? Not in these times.....and as November draws nigh, it's going to be fascinating to watch what people pull out of their backsides to do what they think improves their chances at the ballot box...and nothing is off limits, and it's going to be gross.
