black wire, white wire and ground. Instead I found a black wire, red wire and ground. Do I just hook them up as if they were what I expected? For clarification, I'm replacing a turn switch with a flip switch.

Well, I'm assuming the black and red are your hot and neutral, just need to figure out which is which. Typically you see black and red in a circuit that has a double pole breaker, but you also usually have a white for neutral as black and red are usually both hot. If you have a voltage tester, check to see which one is the hot wire.
