Congratulations Cincinnati Reds

I am wondering if this is commonplace right now in a lot of MLB stadiums?? ...and I don't know the answer but I have no idea why people would want to sit tbrough 3 hrs+ of a shitty product rhat has zero chance of acheiving anything. When fans go to a game for an organization who's only looking at the dollars....they're supporting that owner financially. Screw em.

back in the day they had dudes

In our area Twins fans I know who used to drive up to games say they don’t want to go to downtown Minneapolis anymore. They say it looks like a war zone.

Terrible ownership. As a Pirates fan I'm torn between laughing at the plight of a division rival and sympathizing because we also have terrible ownership.

Early-season crappy weather is often a valid reason for such attendance. Probably not a true indication of fan engagement. Oakland? Yes. Cincinnati? Probably not.

in 1984 the difference between the highest payroll and the lowest was about 7 million dollars - the highest was about 2.8x the lowest

today the difference is almost 300,000,000 dollars

I go to games in downtown cincy, Detroit, and Chicago. Never felt unsafe. Reds just suck and no one wants to watch that
Went to a a white Sox game a few years ago. It was like going in to the area medium security prison for a church service. At least I know the inmates aren’t armed.

Maybe the Sioux City Explorers will have to move to Dakota Dunes.
I wonder if they would prefer the stench from Sioux City’s sewage treatment plant where they are now or the occasional drift from LaFleur’s cattle feed yard several miles north of Dakota Dunes.

Baseball is my favorite sport, but the MLB model is broken in so many ways it's hard to even scratch the surface. The lack of parity due to no salary cap and guaranteed contracts are right at the top. I know it will never happen but I dream of an MLB with NFL salary/payroll structures and parity across the league. Knowing on day 1 that your team can't compete is a bitch.

This post sums it up. Loyal fans wait year after year for their team to finally hit on a some young prospects, and then when your young stars are becoming eligible for free agency you trade them away for... (drum roll).... more prospects! It's ridiculous.

I love baseball. We will go to about 10 different stadiums every year. Went to a White Sox game last weekend with infant children. Drank, ate, conversed with fans and had a great time for the two hours I was there. Never feared for my life being in South Chicago. Didn’t get accosted by the homeless. Didn’t die from a heart attack or black on black crime. I swear I don’t know what world some of ya’ll live in.

Probably will head up to Minnesota this week when the Yankees visit. Will report back on the alleged war zone around the stadium.

Delusional

Don't talk to me about baseball after we in Vegas just committed to build a billion dollar new stadium for the worst team in MLB.

Good news is that the A's have shown they're terrible negotiators so they leaked this before it was actually fully agreed upon. I don't think they're going to get anywhere near the public money they think they're going to get.

For spending the money on baseball, maybe. For not being afraid about all the other stuff…. Ehhhhh..
But, but, but... big cities are supposed to be just like Yankton! I have mentioned this before on here, but my wife and I went to Minneapolis for a weekend in 2018. We were walking around the Nicollet Mall area after dark (11pm?) and I gotta admit I didn't feel super safe. It was mostly deserted with the exception of a few shady looking types. Would I do that again knowing Minneapolis has some crime issues? No. Would I go to a Twins game with zero fear while using my brain to stay safe? Yes.

This game is going to be broke in every small market city until a salary cap and floor are put in place.

A team with one of the lowest payrolls is in the playoffs every year and is currently 17-3. The reds are run by morons. So are the royals.

Letting owners hang on to more of their money instead of using it to pay players is a terrible idea.

It's totally true - billionaires could compete if they wanted to. However, with no cap it would just be an arms race. Cohen etc would still outbid the poors for the players they want. But a floor would be a good place to start (also will never happen).

edit: Also, they're not morons from the perspective that they're making money and building huge wealth putting straight garbage on the field. Again - broken model.

I have some good friends who just moved to Sioux Falls to get out of Minneapolis. They’ve lived in the cities for a long time and they said they totally quit going downtown because of the crime.

Yeah, well they’re drawing 20,000 a game so I guess not everyone has that issue.

They aren't losing solely because they don't spend $. They lose because their player development and their front office sucks. Organizations like the Astros and Rays run circles around the rest of the league.

Cincinnati beat Tampa Bay at home the other day. They played this game in front of 7,375 fans. This was the smallest turnout for a Reds game in their 21 years at the Great American Ball Park.

Who’s to blame?
Two equal parts:
-ownership billionaire who won't spend
-no salary cap....works in other sports
