Is it normal to grip the ball like he does to snap the shotgun/pistol?

I had not seen it before but it works well for Kelley. He gets some zip on his snaps, getting the ball to the QB quickly.

I don't remember seeing that. Seems like a half rotation up to the qb. Perfect every time.

UW center's technique is similar but he puts more air under the snap.

Not to hijack thread, I didnt watch the center so I dont know. My question is on your question. What does shotgun/pistol have in common? The shotgun is where the QB is, the pistol is where the RB is set up. I am not following. And yes I know what the pistol formation and concept is.

Well it's Colorado so of course it's normal for their center to grip the ball with just his thumb and index finger....Smokin

I think the qb may be a little closer to the center than he is in the shotgun? and usually has a rb on each side. I could be wrong

Here is a link that goes into some great detail on the pistol.

You are correct in that the QB is closer than the shotgun but the RB is directly behind the QB at I Back depth. The idea is to keep the QB close enough to the LOS to read the D and the RB back far enough to read the blocks. So the main difference is how far the center is snapping the ball but in both cases it is a shotgun type snap. I am sure for most fans when they see the QB back away from the LOS they think he is in the shotgun but if there is a back directly behind him he is actually in the pistol. Obviously there are variations of both the shotgun and pistol so it gets blurry. So technically, your double back set is not the pistol although they could line up with twins and be at pistol depth if that makes sense.
