Is he still on the team? I haven't heard his name mentioned anywhere and if I'm not mistaken, he was the 2016 scout team MVP. With all the relative newcomers set to play this year on defense, I would have thought his name would be in the mix as well.

Big opportunities at the CAT OLB. Will be interesting to see who wins out at that position.

Not this year, but maybe next; don't sleep on Jordan Paup. Kid has people noticing already how physically developed he is.
we always forget about kids already in the system and worry about the next big recruit who may be several years from playing. We will be surprised this year by somebody that steps up and plays a role on our team. Still need to chase difference makers but we've got good depth to plug holes til we find em.

Paup isn't really already in the system yet. 2017 walk on.

well sort of in the system. We forget about the guys that are actually going to be here and might contribute. That goes for incoming freshmen on up to returning redshirt juniors. Guys can change and mature a bunch in a year. Who in their right mind saw Cole Conrad doing what he did last year? It wouldn't surprise me to see an incoming walk on freshman WR get playing time this year.

Ok I will go deeper. Paup is "forgotten" because he is already in the system but not because anyone doubts his potential or doubts how much he will improve, or doubts he will be the next Cole Conrad.

He is "forgotten" because he has already said yes. It's time to move on to the next class of recruits. Now he has to show it on the field.

Fans are always looking to replace what's here with something better. I'd imagine the coaches are doing the same thing.

Edit - I can hope Paup never plays a down at Nebraska because the players recruited in his class and after him are just simply better. That isn't meant to be a slight on the kid. I can hope the same about Butler, Dismuke, or Anderson.

Just remember Dismuke and Butler are just now redshirt freshmen this year. Last year our DBs had some depth at safety positions. I am hopefully these two kids will start to show out this year or next. Dismuke looked promising out of high school as a 4 star Safety and Butler was kinda under radar but he was a 3 star. This year or next hopefully these two will start to get minutes on defense.

I can appreciate that I believe you are talking mostly about a fraction of the fanbase here, maybe folks like yourself who are both "recruitniks" and Nebraska fans.
Maybe I am naive but I think that there is a big chunk of Nebraska fans, probably primarily outside the metro areas that won't "forget" about guys like Paup just because a guy like a Carson comes up from Missouri the next year on scholarship.
I am like you in that I hope that the baseline for quality football players gets raised up like ol Boyd Eppley talks about. But I am also pulling for these other scholly guys like you metnioned and the preferred walk-ons at the same time to develop under these coaches to continue the pipeline that's the Walk On Program

Remember Remember

I know that you are talking about the never ending recruiting cycle, primarily, which is mostly self-evident that you might "forget" about some walk-ons. Like I said I hope that's just a fraction of the fanbase. If true then Nebraska would be missing out on one of its fan traditions in my opinion. It used to be fun to watch the backups get in the game, guys like Jordan. Now that is getting harder to remember

I think it's tough to have it both ways in today's football. Having a Top 10 recruiting classes and holding tight to the walk on tradition. If you have top 10 classes, inevitably you will have more players that contribute

I am not making myself clear to you. It's about elevated recruiting. If I am able to recruit a freshman that can beat out a RS Soph, that is my goal. When I say I hope they never play, it isn't because I realistically think they won't. Just in my perfect world, you get to a point where you are recruiting and signing the elite players.

He's back and was working inside on day one.

Still early, if someone doesn't emerge at the boundary OLB spot or if Miller doesn't progress as expected at ILB he could easily move back outside. Remember he didn't practice much in the spring.

Hey, Tuco, you keep pretty close tabs on this stuff; who is going to be our big attacking OLB in the 3-4 this year? Which guy, or at least, which group of guys?

Whatever happened to DaiShon Neal, by the way?

Tough to say. I wouldn't be surprised to see Newby move to the other side, if Gifford and Alexander can hold down the field side. I think Alex Davis will be given every opportunity to secure that Boundary side.

I have heard Neal is doing well. I have heard mention of him getting work at all 3 spots and is in a group of 7 that will see some playing time.

Yeah I was wondering about that, because his deal is that he's very tall but not necessarily built like a defensive end in a 3-4, so I thought he might wind up being one biiiiiiig OLB, but I mean, who knows.

Our depth sucks.

Just heard that Guy Thomas is weighing 230 lbs. if he is at that weight and can keep it on, I could see him making significant contributions this season.
