College baseball gambling scandal

Even before the era of the information age and big data, point shaving schemes have typically been caught once it graduates to bigger $$$. It has been easy to spot anomalies and the books talk to each other. The perpetrators get greedy, need more people to place bets, and human behavior does them in.

In this era they can zoom in to see the Signal message on the dude's phone.

Yeah I have watched interviews with mob dudes and basically it was all the same. Smaller bets at different locations.

10K is better than No K...

With that said, I do not think anyone with inside info should be punished for making a bet. Not from a legal point of view. If the boss wants to axe you, okay. But that is it. I have no idea if people can get locked up for having inside info when it comes to sports wagering but that should be on the book...not the gambler.

If you have "inside information" you certainly dont audibly announce it to anyone especially the people you are trying to take their money from by using that information. I had an account at mybookie closed because they thought I had inside information. They arent fans when you are on a hot streak, but will send promo emails when you are cold or not actively wagering.

It's nice when morons get what's coming to them. It so rarely happens. Although, I'm not sure these guys could be this stupid. It seems more likely that organized crime had their nuts in a vice to make them this desperate.

All that keeps echoing in my head is, " Gambling is harmless, no one gets hurt...". This is a prime example of smart people getting hurt. Everything starts off as harmless and then it snowballs to the point of no return. This is also an example of the minority killing it for the majority. There is no such thing as innocent gambling, after a while it becomes a problem, and the only one who makes money is the people taking it. Cathedrals in Vegas prove this. I will never be in favor of legalized gambling and this is why, but it is not my money, it is yours to do with as you see fit. My heart goes out to those whose lives are ruined by this.

Looks like a bunch of clowns to me. Total idiots all the way around. I'm constantly amazed at the amount of people who work their way into a great job with a huge salary and then waste it over things that are 100% avoidable.

I think he means the players, coaches who could have been hired, families, etc. there negative externalities for sure. Doesnt mean gambling shouldnt be legal, but the saying that gambling is harmless to those not involved isnt true.

So how does that make him smart? Getting an MBA doesn't make you smart..

That's a full fledged moron right there.

There's a reason that betting limits are in place and one reason why is just for this situation. I think there's been a lot more point shaving going on than people realize. I remember watching a Thursday night college football game involving Marshall about 15 years ago. Marshall had two receivers in that game that were dropping passes and fumbling all over the place. If I remember correctly, Marshall was a pretty big favorite and they lost the game out right. I thought for sure that there would be an investigation of that team but nothing ever became of it.

Or perhaps more
Insider trading with Nancy Pelosi making a fortune. Marj T-G doing the same thing. No consequences.

Accepting trips and gifts and then judging a Supreme Court case involving your generous "friend". Then coming out and saying that only the Supreme Court can decide if it's members have been corrupt. No consequences.

Fortenberry must be pissed. All of this grift, embezzlement, and profiteering from government "service" and he's seemingly the only one who faced criminal charges. Of course, getting 300 hours of community service isn't bad when you're facing 15 years of prison time.

Put a lawyer in an auto repair shop and see how smart they seem. There are all different types of intelligence. And having an MBA doesn't mean that one is going to have morals, common sense, or any tactical criminal intelligence whatsoever.
Correct.

Makes me wonder why so many people want the “elitist” schools education to begin with.

Connections, for one. Politics, law, being on a board of directors, it's helpful for those things. Should it be? No, but old conservative wealth is going to do what it wants to do. But in other cases, it isn't necessary. I think people are slowly figuring that out. I remember hearing a story about a girl who gave up a full ride to her home state University of Texas in order to go to Tulane, which has a highly respected education department apparently. Fast forward five years, she's back in Texas working next to Texas grads and she's got $100k in student loans.

There is a lot of truth in what you wrote. Not sure how many elitist schools for conservative title but old school money and the wealthy families that want power will do what they can to keep it, irrespective of any political ideology

Agreed. When I said conservative, I meant it as a mindset not as a political reference. People with a conservative mindset don't want change, and with this particular issue there are people who don't want this particular system to change on both sides of the political spectrum.

That’s certainly true. Keeping power is the focus. Thanks for the clarification. Have a great weekend
