The variable that has changed is the pitching coach. We will see if that affects the results.

Gomes is still mainly a 2 pitch guy and when he gets in trouble the FB has little movement and gets tagged. Same as in HS where he was able to lean on high velo to power by guys that could not catch up. He has everything you’d want in a pitcher, but he has not been developed by his college coaches. He’s the same guy I saw in HS.

What concerns me is you can say similar things from most of the staff. Povich is better than he was in HS, but he spent time at a quality Juco.

His change is a work in progress. If he would have had proper coaching last year he’d have a solid 3 pitch mix. I’m not dumping on the kid, I’m calling out how bad the coaching and development has been for pitchers under Erstad. Gomes is the latest example of that. Hopefully this staff can get him developed before he graduates.

I hated Silva regardless of what @sklarbodds says. :D
Haha my main contention with him was simply based on numbers our pitching was not the problem under Erstad.

I don't know the guy personally, whether he was liked or whatever. Just pointing out that our ERA under him as much much higher ranked nationally (usually top 1/3ish) than our BA/scoring almost every single season (usually bottom 1/3ish).

So when people would say that they're fine with Erstad if he replaced Silva it made me wonder based on what??
