Coach White

Can't really think of any coordinator hires in a while who were young, experienced, current job wanted to keep them, and other teams wanted to steal them. Tired of OTJ training or taking coordinators that other teams were happy to get rid of.

Hell yes!

Pre spring game, I was more optimistic about our offense than the defense.

Completely the other way around now, if just for depth reasons.

Even though I like our defensive hires it worries me that none of them were Tony White’s guys. These were all Rhule’s. Use to be a coordinator could help build the staff. It also worries me that Knighton & Dvoracek are bot first year position coaches (yes I know they’ve been assistant to assistant coaches).

Both show potential, but Nebraska isn’t a place for a coach to “learn as he goes”. Both are expected to produce and if they don’t, the media will hound them. We don’t have a lot of experience in position coaching and that’s scary. How will they react if things don’t go well?

Nebraska media?😂😂😂😂😂

Defense in the spring game looked so disciplined all the way down to the early enrollees not named Umanmielen and Lenhardt. The new Bootle brother, Sefueelah, (sp) Walin, and Maverick all looked well prepared and made nice plays. That’s all coaching.

Spring game does not tell you Jack shit. Defense may have looked good because the offense sucks and/or was keeping things simple. The defense had also played against that offense all spring, and vice versa. I have said it before and I will say it again, other than seeing the talent displayed by this or that player (e.g., how lively is the QB’s arm), spring games give you almost zero indication of how good you are on ether side of the ball. I like White, but I am not buying any hype until I see this defense pummel Minnesota.

Good points and outside of Sims who’s learning a new offense, the offense didn’t inspire a lot of confidence. But I believe it has typically been the offense that has looked better in spring games. Live QBs definitely changes that too though.

We shall see but I am drinking the White koolaid (cocaine?) He’s a proven defense builder at a school that typically got lit up in the ACC.

Nebraska media?😂😂😂😂😂
This is exactly the response I’d expect from a child. But that can happen when mom and dad leave a little girl unsupervised in front of a computer. You constantly post nothing with substance or respond to anything that requires more than a 8 year olds education. Appreciate your response touching on nothing I really posted, dumbbell or I mean drubendall

The Nebraska media doesn't truly criticize a coach's poor performance until after they've already been fired or left. That would be very low or non-existent on my list of concerns. Now fan noise before/after games, that's a legitimate concern because of it being the only show in town. For a program with as much prestige historically as Nebraska has been, the media here is way more accommodating than other big time football schools. You have to be a combo of a crappy person to the media/fans while also being piss poor at your job in order to actually get heavy criticism here.

White and Rhule have been friends a while. I would assume White signed off on the assistants and wouldn't have taken the job if he didn't feel comfortable. Sounds like he had plenty of other options in addition to continuing to build the D he created at Syracuse.

Our play in the trenches will tell the story of the season.
We also need more reliable tackling from safeties, but I have more faith the competition will make it happen in the secondary.

We've certainly had some bad ones. Chins was awful other than the year he had a bunch of Covid seniors and then they were just OK. Diaco was a joke and got Riley fired. Banker was average. Papuchis got torched. Last good DC we had was Carl Pelini and he was a libertine to say the least.

Agree to a point, it doesn’t tell you how good you will or can be. But it can show you how aggressive a DC may be with his schemes or and calls. It looks like Tony White will just not sit back in a base defense like Frosts best man did.

And even going back further. Cosgrove, no one wanted him. Bo was the Packers LB coach, not an experienced coordinator. OC'S more of the same from what I can remember.

You can tell some things from the spring game, specifically with technique

Clear the D line wants to bat balls at the LOS - something we’ve been awful at for 10 years

I perceived:

If you light people up, you get PT (Rollins, Bonner, Bullock)
There was more motion than Frost and Whipple used
The defense often found ways to get 7 lined up against 6 leading to an unblocked guy in the backfield (like when Sims had to roll out and scramble)
Kemp always seemed to be open
Tackling was decent and nasty
Coach White is highly competitive
Receivers need some work on looking balls in
Fairly big dropoff when second string line played
Some other stuff I can't remember right now...

Sorry, my two word response triggered you so much. Maybe up your therapy sessions to two or three times a week instead of just once? That wasn’t even my best work.

Nebraska media members are a bunch of bootlickers. They don’t get rough on a coach until after he’s fired.

Carl was DC by title only. Bo ran the defense and they were only really good when they had Suh

Hartzog + Newsome on the outside give White 9 guys to play with every down

this luxury cannot be overstated in our league largely bereft of playmakers at QB

Guys I appreciate your enthusiasm. That said, I am modestly concerned/skeptical of the defense for this season and here's why.
1) new system and lots of learning
2) at times this spring, d looked susceptible to the run. Will we be able to stop heavy b1g run game?

On the positive side, I liked the flexibility and multiple disguised sets. If we can get opponents to 3rd and 6, we're gonna be fine. Imo 1st and 2nd down will be critical.

I liked our improvements on speed, athleticism, swarming and tackling fundamentals that I saw. Get opponents to pass on 3rd down and I believe we're going to be ecstatic with our turnover stats.

GBR

I remember when everybody was worried that Our last DB coach was going to get hired away or that Chin was going to get a head coaching job….. White has a lot to prove before we need to worry about him leaving. Pot roast getting a DC job might be more likely if we’re successful this fall.

I honestly cannot remember the last coach to leave NU for a promotion in any sport

In the same vein it would be great to someday worry about losing a QB early to the draft, it would sure be nice to get to get the program to a point where other schools would like to poach our assistants.
