Just watched his film. Kid looks very explosive! Rivals 5.5 3* seems silly. What's the latest on him? Seems pretty open despite Oregon commit. Are we still interested in Greg Johnson at RB?

NU v Oregon race---they are trying to flip Carr from USC, we MAY be showing more love right now.

Would love to have this guy in the class!

Johnson would be a DB but I think he stays in the land of Troy.

NU, USC and Oregon going to be all up in each other's faces for the next few weeks.

Here are some comments from a USC message board on CJ Verdell from January 2016:

- This kid is a must get along side our other Running back recruit.

- Kid is a spitting image of Christian McCaffrey, not even kidding. Absolute must get, in fact if our staff doesn't go hard after this kid I really question what there seeing, completely dominates!

- Film is unbelievable. He does not lose speed through his cuts and is back to full speed in a couple steps. Let's hope USC coaches don't get caught up on the measurable and look at his tape instead. I'd take this kid over Carr in a heartbeat.

- He's the kind of guy if I were a coach I would offer him now and tell him he could play early, he's the shit as a runner, just punks anyone that comes near him.

- It's division IV, they didn't exactly play any SoCal powerhouses. Every high school RB runs a self-reported 4.5, just on the eye test, he doesn't run anywhere near a legit 4.5.

One of the more impressive RB tapes I've seen in a while, just trying to find reasons he is under the radar.

- You probably don't even know what a 4.5 looks like! That dude runs a 4.5 I can promise you that, I have a family friend that played against him and he's been to camps and says he's faster then our current commit next year.

- Wow the kid really seems to be something special by his film...Would be a great pick up by the staff if Najee doesn't flip. Amazing how guys like this don't have offers.

- No worries though, I guess your right! I guess if the coaches don't want a guy like this then they don't want a legite running back for USC again.

- Damn. We need to get this kid out to the next RSC.

One of the more impressive things I saw from his tape aside from the obvious, was that it appears he never gives up on a play. The dude goes all out for that extra couple yards after contact.

- I found this.
"Verdell is a very special running back he is a home run hitter with blazing 4.5 speed and excellent vision and ability to cutback and make people miss, at 190 pounds Verdell is not easy to bring down ! When asked who he models his game after Verdell responded " I think i run a'lot like LaDainian Tomlinson in his prime " Verdell and Charger great LT do have a'lot in common.

In school Verdell refuses to get anything less than a B and is always striving for A's as he knows it will help in his recruiting process . As far as recruiting goes Verdell has yet to hear from any colleges but rest assure by the end of the season he should have a couple off offers, heading into his senior year Verdell will be one iff the top recruits in the county looking to land a Division one scholarship Verdell has all the tools to be a division one player he has a good frame standing at 5'9 and weighing 190 pounds blazing 4.5 speed and the ability to bench press 285 pounds .
When asked what He needed to do in the offseason to improve Verdell Responded "As a running back I need to alway look to get bigger, stronger, faster, and work on different moves to use during the games". CJ is a participant in Track where he went to CIF his freshman year for long jump and triple jump and got second place in triple jump. CJ Verdell is truly an athlete with a great personality on and off the field he has a bright future ahead off him"

For what its worth, He reminds me of LaMichael James (also 5'9") who finished his rushing career 2nd in Pac-12 Conference history and 14th in NCAA history. Heart is more important than height at RB!

I'm fine with what we have at RB. I'd like to see efforts turn toward 2018 when it comes to that position. That said, this kid is a good back. Great fit for Oregon and he would look good in a Husker uniform. Tough to tackle what you can't touch. He's got great moves, breaks tackles.

For me, I would like to see NU try something different at RB. Take a page out of the Packers and Chiefs playbook and put a receiver back there at I-back. Use a fullback and a sixth lineman now and then. How about Lamar Jackson at wildcat with JD Spielman at RB and Tyjon Lindsey coming by on the fly sweep?

I think 2018 might be kinda boring in terms of RB recruiting. Grahm Roberts would probably be expected to jump on board early. Not sure how many we are taking next year.

I have to admit that I don't know a thing about next year's RB prospects, but it seems to me that recruiting a year ahead is crucial if you are Nebraska and you want to recruit that position nationally. Seems like all of the good RBs commit early.

He and Bradley look too much alike. If you are going after two RB's in a class try and take two different styles? Could be wrong in my assessment.

I'm not a big fan of "styles" of RB. You either make guys miss and you gain yards or you don't.

We made all this noise about guys like Quentin Castille and Imani Cross and what great "power backs" they were. They never lived up to the hype.

I mean what "style" of RB is Rex? He's not fast enough to be a speed back, he's not big enough to be a power back, etc. All he did was come to NU and make a bunch of great runs.

Considering we have stud recruits everywhere else on the offense except RB, I think we should be going for a Rivals100 RB next year, because you know our QB, WR, OL, and TE picture is very bright for the next few years. Only thing missing is a legit 5* RB

Can he catch the ball out of the backfield? Does he run better in space or in traffic? Are you going to sub for him on third down with a bigger guy or put him in for his pass catching and speed to get outside. Look at the three RBs we have now - all three are different - Wilbon, Oz, and Newby. There are three distinct backs there alone.

My thoughts as well.

"Style" of RB and too small have made us miss on some good to great RBs. B. Sanders, D. Sproles, D. Woodhead.

Kid looks very fast on film, 1 cut and go, but is small and doesn't show much else.. pure speed and some vision, but mostly tries to take it outside.. I like who we have at RB already, just comparing the film.

You just confirmed what I said. What do all three of these guys have in common? They are small, quick, speed backs - not known for their power.

Rex was used as an example and he is a good one or a bad one depending on your point of view. Rex is simply a complete back. He can run inside and outside, between the tackles and has enough speed to get around the corner. He can block and he can catch the ball, he can put a move on you or he can run you over, has great balance or enough finesse to get around you. While he could be overall a bigger threat he does all things fairly well. I think you get the point. As I said earlier - just look at the current Husker backfield of Wilbon - smaller, quicker back that Langs and Riley tried to get in the open field, swing passes, etc - you didn't seem him in there when they needed one yard and a could of dust. Ozigbo was your typical power back - enough speed to get to the outside but he isn't going to make a living out there, can catch the ball well enough but you aren't going to see him all the field catching balls, Newby was more complete than the other two - better speed, good power, could block, great out of the backfield and they used him to his strengths.

I don't think coaches want to get caught, because of injuries or something else by having only one type of back when you need that speed to the outside, or inside runner or someone who can catch it out of the backfield.
