For the inevitable comments about him not being a "Nebraska guy", I will note that Riley splitting the team up in to 2 squads has given walk-ons maybe the best chance to show what they can do maybe since Frank was canned. ANY coach at NU that is open and honest with area high school coaches will be just fine in this position. They will get to know him quickly and if he's as good of a recruiter and person as it sounds like he is, he will be a "Nebraska guy" very quickly.

I agree with this.

I trust Coach Riley but it seems if any position need some local flavor it would have been this one ...oh well...

He will have that local flavor quickly I suspect. Riley has given every indication that he understands that this is Nebraska's program and he's a caretaker. His openness and genuine personality is going to win over area coaches quickly IMO. Nebraskans are quick to claim a person as their own if you treat them right.

Before the inevitable and inaccurate remarks that I am nothing more than a "Bo believer" tell me something. In all of Huskerland there is not one qualified person to be the Walk-on Coordinator? No former Husker coach or player who has a sense of Nebraska's traditions and ties to the region's high schools? Not one person?

We get your point and perhaps the hire is a little bit of a surprise but you have to admit, it looks like a great hire. Can contribute on and off the field, has a great backround in the state of Texas as well as experience and contacts in Chicago. Has been ranked as one of the top recruiters in Div. I (FBS). Will get to know the HS coaches in Nebraska fast while making a positive impression. Coach Riley, like any CEO, surrounds himself with known commodities, people he knows and trusts not unlike Coach Devaney and Coach Osborne.

Am I to take it that you don't approve? Would you not want the best person to run this part of the organization? If you were running a business, would you not hire the best available person to handle a certain position? It sounds like MR and his staff have researched and embraced just about every tradtion that the Huskers are known for. I'm pretty sure he'll do the same with this one.

"Has been ranked as one of the top recruiters in Div. I (FBS)."

Can we stop about being highly ranked in recruiting. I live in the Northwest. The bottom two teams in the Pac 12 as far as talent year in and year out are the Washington State Cougars and the Oregon State Beavers. They get the leftovers. Recer Stadium and Autzen Stadium are 50 miles and millions of dollars apart.

It isn't the people on this board that selected him as one the top 50 recruiters in 2012. You may disagree with it, but 247sports named him a top 50 recruiter. I don't know why you to shut people up about an award given to him.

Being the best isn't what this hire is all about. The guy is a good coach and can perform this function as MR envisions until he lands a coaching gig. Heck we might just pay his move from Oregon to Nebraska so a Texas school can get him.

As Devaney would say about out of state players it isn't his fault he wasn't born in Nebraska.

Schools in Texas are hiring local high school coaches for this position. Reason, they already know the high school coaches in the state. The key to this job is a relationship with high school coaches and this comes with time. Riley doesn't have years to build this relationship. In my opinion Riley missed with this hire. He could have found a coach with 20 or so years within the state that really knows the coaches and they know him. No bone for Nebraska high school coaches at UNL.

I'd rather have Brasfield than some local high school guy. We're looking to play big time football, if Brasfield can be in contact with future players (and not just walk-ons), makes more sense to have him on staff (ala our new director of player personnel), than Damon Benning's boss at North.

A social guy that knows football, can do all the smoozing a local guy can do.

I would agree since the focus tends to be in state. I still think Brasfield will do a good job of outreach and relationship building. Just dont see him long for the job if coaching is where his heart is.It's a nice fit for both sides for the next year until he decides to get back into coaching.

1. Who were the candidates
2. Who do you recommend
3. Which "local guy" was turned down
I will hang up and listen to the dead air response.

I don't think its beyond the realm that Brasfield is being kept around "in the wings" in case Davis or another coach takes off. Might as well capitalize on his recruiting ability as well as handle a few walk-ons.

This! My parents are Iraqi immigrants and although we left Omaha 9 years ago some of our closest friends are still Nebraskans.

We have gone down this road with Wasker before. Don't hold your breath.

If the guy is a good recruiter, then this is a good move. End of story. You don't need some guy who rolls into town in somebody's grain bin telling stories about Jerry Taggae. You need somebody to identify the kids who are worth a D-1 roster spot and to let them know they matter to the team.

If HS coaches and players need a guy to be FROM Nebraska in order to get them interested in playing for NU, there are deeper problems. Either a kid grows up wanting to be a Husker or he doesn't, one guy doesn't change that. This guy's job is to build the bridge and let kids know that yes, NU wants you. You have something to offer our program.

The rest of the job needs to be done on the field. Kids aren't leaving the state because NU isn't "Nebraskan" enough, they're leaving because the old staff didn't want them that bad or they had a chance to play for a team they think will be better.

Its amazing how many military folk down here at Offutt "go native" rather quickly. Being born here or working as a HS HC here, doesn't automagically make one the best walk-on coordinator available.

I haven't lived in Nebraska for 35+ years. You guys who live there are telling me there is not one qualified person; former coach, player, high school coach, in all of Huskerland to fill this position? The best option was a guy who spent the last 4 years in Corvallis? Gee, I guess when Tom retired from Nebraska it created a vacuum of coaching talent. Not one local person is qualified for the walk-on coordinator job. So a former running back coach who somehow has some national publication naming him a top 50 recruiter when the school he was coaching at finished 29-33 the last 5 years is the absolute best candidate we can get.

I know Riley like every other coach wants to surround himself with a staff that he is comfortable, but isn't anyone else concerned he has brought too many of his old Corvallis gang with him?

Here's some advice, educate yourself on the job description before sharing an opinion on what you (wrongfully) think the position is all about.

On the whole reason for not looking at Ron Brown, Riley said he would rather go with people that he knows. This move shouldn't surprise anyone. He is going to find people with whom he has worked in the past.

Brasfield was a candidate for the texas WR job. This is better than any of the local potential hires.

Qualified person v's best person for the job, is a rather large separation in definition. Who ever the Head Coach is, it is his decision. He is the one that lives or dies by his decisions, not you nor I. We are not accountable, he is. On the surface, what we see this appears to be an excellent choice. We are all probably a little surprised by the lack of a Nebraska presence on the staff, the strength and conditioning program and the support staff, but so what. What we care about are our student athletes being taken care of, academics, athletics, ethics, character as well as wins and loses. Some even care about media relations. The CEO must go with what he knows and has experienced.

^I agree^
Wasker of course, Any Nebraska fan who Truely cares about Nebraska see's exactly what You see. However Being a True Nebraskan is about being Tough, but also being humble and slow to judge.
I totaly see your point and deep down It crosses all our minds. How could it not after the years of coaching changes that we have all been through here. And each one basicaly just hiring some friends for Very Important roles. But like someone else said, The Head Coach lives and dies with these decisions, and we all pray he understands that. Not sure how Mike of all guys wouldn't, having done it his whole life now. But we have seen crazier. Haha
The coach is always allowed to do whatever he wants, including making a change down the road. Lets hope he isn't the type of coach who can't change. We have all seen what that leads to aswell.

It`s always easy to be critical but not so easy to offer solutions.

Yup. He conveniently dodged any legit questions posed to him. Most trolls do, they learned from the resident super-troll.

Does it really matter if he's a Nebraska guy or not? I think it's reasonable to assume if you grow up playing high school football in Nebraska and have any desire to play college ball, it's safe to assume Nebraska is going to be one of, if not your top, choice. Therefore, do you think a kid will rule us out when Nebraska comes a calling, just because the guy calling didn't grow up or previously work around here?

Dinglefritz, you are on fire. Appreciate your post and agree. This is a " great " talent evenluator; so walk-on program extends to Tx and other areas; with N first.
