I recall when Frank Solich was fired that Nebraska was getting onto the coaching carousel that other schools had been on continuously. NU avoided the ride from 1962 until 2003. We were known as a blue collar team that never quit and was known for its tough running game and offensive pipeline.
Peterson/Callahan brought us the wide open west coast offense (we forgot how to run) The problems persisted which was why Solich was fired (losing a few games a year by ass kicking) Subsequently both are fired after getting contract extensions.
Bo Pelini never won less than 9 games a year but pissed off many with his bombastic behavior. He still lost a few games a year by ass kicking. That problem still plagued Nebraska.
Next comes Reily. My opinion hired solely for his calm demeanor similar to T.O. Reily may be a nice guy but he is no T.O. This was the year, most pieces were in place for the Big Red to start moving up the ladder, and lo and behold we are worse now than anytime I can remember NU ever being. That is one hell of a statement, and the ass kickings keep on coming.
I think the Oline is whoa-fully behind the curve and I blame Cav, he is their position coach. The fact that we ran Bryant into the IR pisses me off. The other backs should have had some snaps just in case they were to lose their #1 back which we did. Same can be said for Lee. At some point his coach (Langsdorf/Reily) should have sat him a series for nothing more than give him a break, he was getting his ass kicked. O'Brien should have gotten at least a series in every game. If Lee goes down do we really want O'Brien going in cold without any game snaps? don't think so. I think back to the Osborne days and really believe he would given these kids a break by at least sitting one series.
For any redemption, this week NU has to roll Rutgers but I don't think they can. I don't think Reily is on the hot seat yet! but he should be. If anything Cav and maybe even Langsdorf have to go. If Reily wants to save his job, he has to make the same changes he did for other coaches.
The defense played with heart but still needs to improve. The offense has talent but sadly needs massive improvement.
If Reily can't right the ship by the end of year, he and Eichorst should be gone as Nebraska takes another turn on the carousel.
