No matter how this class ends up. These coaches have busted their a$$es to get the top talent here. I have never in my 13+ years on this site ever seen this type of finish. Meaning us actually being in the mix with such upper end talent.

If I ever run into either of the Williams at a bar/restaurant I'm buying their dinner and drinks. I know they make more money than me, but I just want them to know that their effort is very much appreciated.

looking forward to see how we finish

for comparison purposes:

Pelini class rank - 30-30-23-15-26-17-32

Riley class rank - 28-26 (28 thus far)

if you throw out the first class (transition year) Pelini's classes averaged a ranking of 23

And look how many of his recruits that helped raise the average didn't pan out! Pelini's name should be permanently banned here! GBR!

I'll say this about the Pelini classes, if he could have developed better, & not lost most of his best signees to baseball, transferring, just sucking, etc... 23rd, while not elite, would have probably been satisfactory. I probably would have demanded better still, but that & not losing his mind would have gone a long ways to him still having a job at NU. That being said, he didn't... And we are where we are now.

not touting Pelini at all .. he was/is scum .. just putting out the rankings ..

and in the spirit of fairness .. Riley's classes haven't been subjected to the test of time to see who does and doesn't "pan out"

I am not sure I would saw all of the coaches busted their ass$$es. I will say about half of them carried the other half. Pretty sad when coach D Will has already worked harder on the recruiting trail for NU then a few that were here all year long. Extremely proud of the coaches that did over time in recruiting. Not too worried about the slackers. Mike isn't playing around.

I've already decided that I'm not gonna go crazy if we don't land a certain level of ranking this year. Sitting here on the outside looking in it looks like the staff has set up a really good system.

I still think we should be able to land top 20 classes year in year out, if we have a top to bottom good staff recruiting. In another thread I said we've offered over 50 DB's this year (not counting the athletes), and no commitments yet. I do think we'll get some of the guys, so that's not the point of the argument. The point is, how can you expect one coach to carry another coach in recruiting when we're having to work so hard in getting recruits.

Not sure how you measure how much a coach busts their ass. Measuring success is much easier to do, but just because one coach is more successful than another doesn't mean the less successful coach is farting around.

Both Williams seem to have it... other coaches do not. Maybe they are just farting around, I don't know. But if your only metric is who they bring in, i don't know how accurate that is. I believe Cav has worked quite hard too... don't know about Davis tho, and maybe that's who you are referencing...

People often forget this but if you included Jordan Stevenson in our 2016 class I believe we'd finish 22nd. While he's clearly a bust and not adding any value its no different than Bo's rating being proped up by guys like Starling and Harrison who we knew were longshots to ever show up on campus.

That 2011 class outside of Ameer who wasn't even one of the stars and Stafford was an epic failure. I know players will bust in every class but depressing looking back how money that class was on paper (espeically the OL).

We were at 9-4 this year. Say one level of talent upgrade (ex this year a deeper Oline and a legit pro QB), we win two of those four. We are probably in B1G title game, with a chance to finish in a Big bowl game. We can get to 1-3 loss seasons with a chance at the playoff. The staff is at least working in that direction.

A lot of truth in this post. One thing for sure now is the ones who have been slacking are on alert. You either pick it up and pull ya own weight or be gone. Its pretty obvious noone is bigger than getting the program where he plans on taking it...I love it

One of the main reason D Williams is here is because of the number of DB commits we have AFTER a tear of recruiting. Accountability

It may be exciting, but if we don't get a single one of the 10ish recruits we feel we have a shot at, I bet this board goes insane, similar to the Saturday of the AA game.

With that being said, it feels like a guarentee that we will land at least 3 solid 4* recruits, if not more.

I never blame the fans that say they don't want to get too excited and will temper their enthusiasm until after signing day is over.

It may get better with Riley, but no matter the coach and how well they close, we will never get ALL of the recruits that commit the last week before NSD. No one does, but things are looking up, that's for sure.

To answer the original question... No, we cannot all agree. I for one am very excited about what this staff has done and continues to do. I like what I see for 2018 very much. Now, translate the good recruiting, to the field, and win lots of games.

Just curious, who isn't pulling their weight? Would it be Davis? Seems like everybody else has been hard at it...

I am wondering because I questioned spinner's assertion as well, but don't have a strong read on things.

Not saying you and spinner are wrong, but just wondering who the coaches are that aren't getting it done with recruiting.

It is what it is, they've done a great job of getting kids on campus, especially elite skill position talent. We still need to get great recruiting classes to have a great team. Momentum, buzz, foundation, etc are great things but if it results in the 27th ranked class it doesn't mean a whole lot. I do appreciate the position this staff has put us in and it certainly seems like they enjoy recruiting much more than the previous staff, but it's a results driven business.

The coaches not getting it done on the recruiting trail are either slacking or losing their battles. Neither is good, so what's the difference really at the end of the day? Coach Dub has proven the so called barriers to entry can be over come IF your a good recruiter. I never believed they couldn't. So if we're talking about Cav or Davis, it's the same IMO. Yes I know Cav works hard. But hell, I'd work my ass off too to be a husker coach but doesn't mean I'm qualified for the job.

Look at the similarities between Coach Cav & his recruitment of FS vs Coach Dub recruitment of TL. Very similar. FS wanted to go to Stanford since he was a kid but his favorite coach was Cav. Likewise, TL wanted to go to tOSU his whole life but his favorite coach was coach dub. One coach got the job done. One did not. Landing FS wasn't impossible. And it's just not that one commit that I'm basing Cav off of.he just hasn't had a great or even good recruiting cycle. There just ok. And ok recruiting gets you ok teams IMO

And no, my initial post was not aimed @ Cav. Yes it was more about Davis. But you seem to want to have an argument on why Cav is such an amazing coach because like you, he's a great guy. I get it. I mean zero disrespect to than man, just don't like any part of his game. His development of players nor his recruiting at this point as been up to par. And in order to return to greatness, all the coaches have to recruit well. Not just some, and not just try but finish. That's what started the decline when Frank took over. Like it our not, but some of those legendary assistants got lazy on the recruiting trail.

Above anything, please note I'm excited as hell about husker football right now. The good things far outweigh the bad. my optimism in the program is at a complete high. Just saying I don't believe all our coaches did well at recruiting this year. But I do feel like we have some prime time guys now and am so excited about that

Good post... agree that Cav has much to prove on the coaching front. You know where I stand about the talent level... I think this last year was tough due to injuries. This coming year Cav really doesn't have the wiggle room he has had before... he needs to bring it next year. Last year's Oline class was solid, this year less so... good but not great.

The big thing I was questioning was how hard he was working. I've seen him standing next to big linemen all the time in Twitter. He's working his ass off, but it may not be enough.

Ultimately, we do need more than hard work. That will take you far, but not as far as we want to go. If our line doesn't improve or improves only marginally next year, I won't argue against his firing should it happen.

Davis is one I just don't understand... seems like he improves our running backs this year, but... Recruiting is a big question mark. Don't even see him standing next to any recruits in twitter...

You have something there, I find it strange that I haven't got a feel for the rb coach, despite all the posts I read and all the other things to be read. He does seem to coach. Maybe he is a good secondary recruiter..... These kids pick things up on their visits, if they hear players aren't getting reps in practice or in some developmental games - they will look at alternatives. Cav has made comments he hears he was getting critics for his no-rotate tendency. We shall see. GBR ... HCMR has often said lines are the foundation. He just switched D systems to strengthen the d-line by subtraction. This is prove it time for Cav, though I wonder if they will give him an assistant.
