Watching this game on Youtube right now, just thought I would post some different things I am seeing.

1st HALF
Funny that the first thing mentioned in the telecast is that BYU has players returning from suspension (including their now departed starting RB Jamaal Williams).

BYU's Offense
  • BYU's first possession is marred with high snaps...including one that ends their drive on 4th down that literally travels 3 feet over Hill's head.
  • BYU had some success running the ball, option keeper by Taysom Hill and some interior runs...but the Texas defense got to Taysom a few times, got a coverage sack as he just had nowhere to go with the ball.
  • Hill seems to get locked into the Matthews early/often in his progressions...stairs him down. If he's not open seems like he has one check down and/or he just tries to make something happen with his legs.
  • Above was evident as he had a play where Texas didn't bite on play action and Hill ended up scrambling for what would have been a 66 yard TD run had it not had been called back. They ultimately had to settle for a field goal.
  • BYU's offensive line between snap issues, holding penalties, etc...looked very sloppy all half long...was having issues with Texas' athleticism on DL.
  • BYU using TONS of play action, you can tell Texas is really concerned about Hill's ability to run the ball and BYU is trying to exploit that.
  • Hill is held in check essentially all first quarter, Texas is getting tons of pressure on him...especially watching Texas' DT destory BYU's OG.
  • Hill escapes three tacklers in the backfield and gains 10 yards where he should have lost 3 or 4.
  • Mendenhall not afraid to go for it on 4th, they have done it twice already in the first half (@12 minutes left in 2nd).
  • Algy (Algernon) Brown is making some nice catches out of the backfield. A larger running back who we'll probably see quite a bit on Saturday. Doesn't seem like he's a very explosive athlete though.
  • Its very apparent that Hill likes to get the ball to his RB through the air.
  • Hill is on the turf a lot, Texas is getting to him and he's clearly having trouble finding open receivers (especially in the Red Zone). They have now had to settle for two FGs inside the RZ.
  • Hill looks good on final drive of half, patience in the pocket...until he overthrows one of his tall WRs and it gets picked off in the end zone.

BYU's Defense
  • BYU defense swarm to the ball carrier, making lots of gang tackles. They are looking very strong against the run, which is ultimately killing Texas' drives.
  • DL penetration blowing up some running plays before they even begin to develop.
  • Texas is having some success with quick passing plays though and moved the ball pretty well against them.
  • Lots of BYU players with 'extra' effort after the whistle, the type of thing that goads the other team to retaliate for personal fouls. Hope our guys can keep their cools with the team culture change.
  • BYU having issues defending the pass when the pocket is moving. Quick plays like bubble screens are also working VERY well.
  • First defensive possession of 2nd Quarter for BYU, they are stout and ultimately Daniel #4 strips the ball from a Texas WR on 3rd and 12.
  • Daniel recovers another fumble on Texas's next offensive play, forced by another player with a hit on the RB (gives BYU a short field).
  • They are just dominating Texas in the second quarter as the Horns can't get anything going. Runs between the tackles are not working at all.

6-0 BYU after 1st HALF.
