I'm amazed at the number of times the coaches have talked about the difference this year due to "buy in" in what they are teaching (Banker at the BR breakfast, Rilely in many interviews lately).

It's obvious by those comments they felt that the lack of "buy in" was a major problem last year, they just couldn't say it out loud last year.

Just a different coaching philosophy.

The previous staff was quick to point out the players aren't doing what was asked.

Plus you run the risk of never getting buy in if you call them out last year.

The psyche of that team was fragile. Like it or not, believe it or not, the majority of the players were pissed Pelini was fired. They won 9 games doing it his way. Now a new coach comes in and wants to change what worked to something that isn't working (in the player's mind).

So far it appears Riley and crew played it right for the long term.

They have run the ball 63% of the time this year...I was surprised to hear that on the radio today.

Maybe stating the obvious, but seems that from comments made, that the D line group was one of the least "bought in" groups on the team. The saying of "addition by subtraction" seems to apply. Not suprising I guess, considering who was leading that group before. Makes me respect a kid like Kevin Maurice for not giving up or giving in.

Seems like the DB's have bought in the most. They may not be perfect at all times but there has been some good things out of them this season.

Makes me glad Riley made the (somewhat major) decision to let a coach go and replace him.

Who knows what the current state of mind would be with the DL right now under Hank Hughes.

Might have been the best decision he makes while at Nebraska.

True, but I would also say that there was some "buying in" that needed to be done by the coaching staff as well. I think they needed to buy in to the fact that the team they were taking over was built more as a running team. Also they needed to buy in that Tommy could be a running QB and that a finesse offense probably won't work in the Big 10.

I think on the defensive side of the ball it was just a matter of guys getting use to the system and getting comfortable with reading plays differently. I also think the schedule has been easier this year allowing the defense to not get completely shredded like it did in the first quarter of the season last year. That allowed them to get some confidence and build off that.

That's why Banker wasn't really shedding a tear when Vince, Maliek, KW, and McMullen all left.

Collins gave a lot of effort, but didn't really care about the context of the scheme. He was in some ways, only out there for himself. Valentine and McMullen were so indifferent about the program that their effort level often illustrated the same type of motivation as a disgruntled employee. Kevin Williams just ran his mouth too damn much and was an annoying distraction in the locker room.

I blame Kazcenski as much as anyone. That dude was still talking to those guys well into the 2015 season. I think he helped perpetuate a lot of negativity.

Read the OWH Big Red Breakfast piece of Banker and Langs and have been catching their post-game interviews on youtube. Each has his own style, both are very straightforward guys. Pretty even keeled in their praise and criticism.
Agree with that the JP for Hank move was huuuge. It's a pretty big deal that the remaining vets are giving it a real good go. Dzuris and KM are our anchors, Freedom and Mick are holding their own and 2/3 Davis are getting very valuable snaps. Haven't heard how much Khalil is playing. But things are setting up nicely on the Dline for the future.

Fair point about the coaches. Not sure it's the same "buy in" as the players have gone through. No doubt their offensive philosophy they brought in cost us games last year, and that doesn't help with player "buy in". Kudos to them on re-evaluating themselves and making changes (bot players and coaches).

If we were 3-2 right now, we probably would still be having the conversation of whether or not "buy in" has occurred. Chicken/egg thing in some regards, but going back to my original point, it was a BIG problem last year.

I'm not sure the first 5 games last year were that much more difficult... miami instead of Oregon, and BYU of course last year, but their back up QB much of the game...

The reality is if this year's team played last year with this amount of buy in we would have started 5-0 in my opinion... conversely, if last year's team played this year we very easily could be 2-3 right now with losses to Oregon and Illinois for sure, and pick one of the other 3 games so far...

We can't underestimate the importance of the buy in from his year's team... it's made a huge difference.

The players have shown incredible heart through some of the hardest times imaginable. And the coaching staff knew what they needed to do while showing the understanding of a tough situation.

This is a legit staff...they have their crap together.

However, it is the coaches' jobs to get the players to buy in, and all good coaches will admit that. They did a poor job of that last year, and I guarantee they would own up to that, because they are good coaches.
