Bubba Starling update

Hope he continues his progress but would love to see him in Omaha for awhile. Hopefully I posted the link correctly

His numbers aren't eye popping in AA ball right now but he's done better than I thought he would. He's only 22 years old right now...give him a few more years to keep progressing and see what he can do in the big leagues. If you asked me last year I probably would have said he would be playing QB somewhere by 2018.

Would not be at all surprised to see him be a September call-up this year. He'd be an interesting guy to have on the bench as a pinch-runner and late inning defensive sub if nothing else.

I saw some Royals fans, on another message board, state they think he is now "untouchable" in possible trade scenarios this year. I hope he has a long career in the MLB.

I don't think he's untouchable. Raul Mondesi JR is the only untouchable player from the Royals organization IMO.

I'm really pulling for this kid. I hope he never plays football, if you know what I mean.

A possibility since the Royals will have to add Bubba to the 40 man roster or else they chance losing him in the Rule 5 draft in December.

Did he get hurt yesterday? Thought I saw a blip in the KC star saying he was carted off the field...

Guys nearly 23 who are having average seasons in AA are not untouchable. Of course, if he had grown up in the Dominican, he'd be much further along, but he wasn't. He may someday justify his lofty draft slot but not yet.

Current stat line. Remember, this is against AA competition in a league where there are only 9 starters with a sub 4.00 ERA:

Games 52
AB 186
R 28
H 51
TB 82
2B 14
3B 1
HR 5
RBI 17
BB 17
K 46
SB 2
CS 5
BA .274
OBP .337
SLG .441

That is not raking. He doesn't have significant power, he doesn't drive in runs, he doesn't steal bases. He is young, though, so maybe in a few years we'll see him. It is crazy to think he is ready for this year or next.

Not entirely sure how it works, but "rule 5" comes into play for him at the end of season. That may be one reason he makes it to the Majors this season once the rosters limits expand toward the end of the season/playoffs. If he did, it'd be only really for a defense/pinch running sub...

Perhaps others may expand on this rule 5 deal and Bubba's situation if they have more details..

Once you've been in the minors for 4 years (5 years if you sign when you're 18 or younger I think), any team can take you in the Rule 5 draft, which takes place in the offseason. The team that selects you then must keep you on the active 25 man roster all of the next season (unless you're hurt, which allows them to scam the system by sending you on lengthy minor league rehab assignments) or else they have to offer you back to your original team.

Thank you. So in theory if he doesn't get called up, some crappy team that wants to take a shot on him may draft him and keep them on their Major league roster all of next season to see what he can do. IF the Royals did call him up this yr, for just this reason (to prevent rule 5), then he's still their's next yr and could play in their farm leagues still. Correct?

I don't see a good team wasting the roster spot for the entire season for a unproven "prospect" by doing this. This rule really designed prevent a log-jammed prospect from being stuck in the minors, and to give other teams a shot at buried talent (but at the risk at a roster spot for a full season). Correct?

Correct. To call a guy up, you have to put him on your 40 man roster. As long as they keep him on (or put him on before the Rule 5 Draft) the 40 man, he is not eligible to be taken.

Correct, it's generally not something a contending team does. A roster spot is too valuable to waste on a guy who isn't ready and how much better can he get if he's rarely playing? I think a team like the Phillies or Rockies should take him. You can let him play some in 2016 and then send him back to the minors to start 2017 if you need to. Much better than running bums like Jeff Francoeur out there 100 times for the Phils and his defensive value could be high at Coors Field for the Rox. And yes, you're again correct about the reason for the draft.

Best recent usage of the Rule 5 draft that I can recall (I'm sure there are other successes) both involved the Cubs. The Reds had the Cubs take Josh Hamilton and then trade him to the Reds right after Hamilton got off the drugs and really took off as a player. Every single team could have had Hamilton. The Cubs took Hector Rondon a couple years ago. He was very raw. Cubs were terrible and he still rarely pitched. He got "hurt" and sent on rehab assignments for at least a month. I think it was the next year where he took over as closer a month into the season. He's now not the closer but is their best reliever.
