Big Ten Power Ratings: Ferentz vs. Dantonio

Kirk Ferentz is the dean of the Big Ten followed by Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald and Michigan State's Mark Dantonio. It has been a good season for the top 3 veteran coaches in the Big Ten.

Head to head, Ferentz leads Dantonio 4-3, since MSU hired the South Carolina DB and former OSU DC away from Cincinnati. Ferentz has been a Big Ten coach for 26 years and the past 17 as head coach.

Iowa and Michigan State have played 3 common opponents in 2015, and a fourth, after Iowa travels to face Nebraska at Lincoln on Black Friday.

Purdue beat Nebraska 55-45, while Michigan State lost @ Nebraska 39-38. So, Iowa can clearly earn the #1 ranking heading into the 2015 Big Ten Championship Game.

Both, Iowa and Michigan State won Power 5 games at home against Top 30 teams, with Pitt and Oregon respectfully. Iowa has a Power 5 win @ Iowa State.

Iowa won three trophy games in 2013 on road, with ISU, Minnesota and Nebraska. Looking to repeat on Black Friday.

I think that he's trying to make the point that Iowa is better than MichSt.

However, MSU beat Ohio St , Michigan and Oregon who are still ranked at 8, 12 and 18 respectively. The only win that Iowa has against a still ranked team is Northwestern at 17.

Does it matter where a team is ranked when you beat them? Or does it matter more where they end up ranked at the end of the season? Teams have injuries or improve as the season goes along, but then often teams are mis-ranked early before they are exposed.

Is NU better than MichSt? They were the day it mattered.
Is MichSt better than Iowa? We will find out on 12/5.
Is NU better than Iowa? We find out on 11/27.
