Big Ten Meeting this morning - cancelling season?

That also coincidentally would correlate with what one could expect as the virus spread from young protestors down the line to more susceptible people. In epidemiological terms, a virus like this takes time to multiply and find susceptible hosts outside the largely youthful demographic of protestors. I'm not saying bars aren't a factor. I'm saying that it was multi-factorial.
how did it expand in so many places without any protests?

Who knows? Contact tracers aren't allowed to ask if people participated in any of the protests. Really makes you think.

Let's be clear about something. We very well could have played this season if we hadn't screwed everything up so bad as a country. Other affluent nations have been able to have sports such as soccer with modifications. IMO there are three things holding us back:
  1. The lack of any sort of national strategy to test, trace, etc. and use the resources we have as one of the wealthiest countries on earth to fight this thing
  2. Complete laziness and ignorance by a swath of Americans that can't handle sacrificing short term pain for long term gain
  3. A for-profit healthcare system that could care less about the suffering going on when they can make a killing off things such as tests that take 7 days to get the results
The commissioners and presidents are seeing data that if we play, maybe a couple football players will die, and maybe a few dozen will have career ending health problems. Even more will have friends and family that die and have long term health problems. Football alone will not cause all coronavirus related suffering, but it will definitely cause enough havoc that you cannot proceed under the current conditions.

  • IMO teachers, school administration, and people on unemployment are happy getting paid not to work. I hope republicans sweep and actually do something to get the country going again.
  • This post was allegedly what was said by a former football coach on tape years ago and told to me by my son's hairdresser.
i think there are some people who are happy not working. but if you really think all those people are happy then you might be the most ignorant person in the world.
Yep, this isn't rocket science. Sissies can stay inside and let us others live a normal life.
well apparently it is rocket science.

Post of the year. The CDC I believe at one point early this summer that Missouri had 24X the number of positive cases as were lab confirmed. There is little doubt that the shut downs and stay at home orders did little or nothing in Missouri. As a contractor I had do some work for me on a property down there said, "there's a whole bunch of government workers down here happy to stay home and keep drawing their full paycheck."

Par for the course from government workers.

protesters without masks are a drop in the bucket compared to all the non-mask wearing public hanging out together every where you look.
but hey, scapegoat away.

I think the point was, that the media told everyone to mask up, close your business, don't go out in public.....etc. Then, the protests hit.....and the media tells everyone to, "get out there and use your constitutional right to protest!" I am not saying that the "non-mask wearing public hanging out together every where you look", is not a factor in the spread, but rather why are they not wearing the mask while hanging out together? Because many of them called bs on the whole pandemic thing after they were told to go in hiding, but it was okay to protest. I believe the pandemic IS real and precautions need to be taken, but I am still shocked at the people that do not see the hypocrisy in this stance.

Yep, when the health experts and politicians started condoning mass protests - after months of telling people to stay home and social distance - many people started tuning them out and living their lives.

The mask obsession didn't start until the protests started. Before that, everyone was saying "Stay Home, Save Lives" and "Stay Six Feet Apart". If Dr Fauci had just told everyone to wear a face covering from the beginning, we could have kept most of the economy open. If masks are that effective, there was no need to close any business other than bars/restaurants.

There are a lot of teachers who want to go back to in school teaching. It doesn't sound like there are many in OPS that feel that way. Private schools IMO are going to have a boom in enrollment especially for young kids where public schools are online.
I have friends that send their kids to Marian and Creighton Prep. One told me Prep is poised to lose up to 400 students if they move to online only classes. OPS may be able to shut down but private school parents actually have leverage, they can pull their kids out of the school.

Then it’s not really a very good point. Masses of people were hanging out without masks well before any of that. Mixed messaging from Fauci, Trump etc that allowed the Dorr Brother propaganda and misinformation machine to take hold has been a much bigger problem.

Every mask wearing and non mask wearing gathering, whether crowded beach, crowded bar, crowded church, gym, and house party ever reported on the news --some of which have been shut down -- are also a drop in the bucket in a nation of 350 million.

It's pretty much the definition of 'arbitrary'.

Anyone asserting that the riots/protests are the primary driver of this spread is every bit as willfully ignorant as someone who asserts that these gatherings don't spread it.

If we DON"T play football this fall "maybe a couple of football players will die from COVID". An infectious disease specialist from the Mayo Clinic said on ESPN radio this morning that there is value in having kids in organized workouts and sports. It isn't the sports that is the problem. But hey, what can he know?

Your "short term pain" has been life ruining for tens of thousands of Americans. They've lost everything in some cases they've worked their whole life for.

We lose a couple of football players each year due to excess heat or exertion bringing an underlying condition to the forefront that a kid has had since birth. This whole thing is dumb as hell. We are ruining the world right now because of fear. F'in China.... I'll never forgive them for ruining sports!

Nice cherry picking of numbers. Simple minds think there is only a binary decision involved

Deaths per Million People from COVID 19
New Jersey-1,795
New York-1,688
Massachusetts-1,265
Conneticut-1,246
Rhode Island-957
Louisiana-905
Belgium-851
DC-837
UK-686
Michigan-653
Mississippi-637
Peru-631
Illinois-619
Spain-610
Delaware-607
Maryland-593
Italy-582
Sweden-570

Sweden 2nd Quarter drop in GDP - 8.6%
US 2nd Quarter drop in GDP - 33%

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/08/05/swe...p-fall-still-outperformed-some-in-europe.html

https://www.businessinsider.com/us-...s-pandemic-recession-lockdowns-economy-2020-7

I can guarantee you that all of those states above Sweden had a larger GDP drop than the 33% US average. How do I know, because most of those states top (or are on the bottom of) the US unemployment list due to their draconian measures that did nothing but make it worse. They have the worst deaths and the worst economies.

1) Conversely.....

Sweden- 570
Washington- 220
Oregon- 80
California- 260
Montana- 70
Idaho- 130
Nevada- 320
Arizona- 580
Colorado- 330
New Mexico- 320
North Dakota- 150
South Dakota- 170
Nebraska- 180
Kansas- 130
Minnesota- 300
Wisconsin- 170.....

2) You should also do a comparison of GDP growth/drop of Sweden's neighbors, who all had much lower fatality rates than Sweden did. For example.....Denmark's 2nd quarter 2020 GDP dropped 4.2% from that same quarter in 2019....with a COVID-19 death rate 5 times less than Sweden's, with stricter measures in place.

3) Glad to know you're pro-choice.

. Agree and anyone asserting that the media was not hypocrites in regard to COVID during protests is ignorant as well. They did an direct about face in commentary once the looting, I mean protests, started. One day gatherings were evil and the next there was no negative comments in gatherings if you held a sign that was consistent with the blm narrative

I don't think it's an either/ or. Yes...I want to go back as well...and will be. That doesn't mean that neither I nor my fellow staff members don't have concerns...or that we care about our kids any less because we do happen to have concerns.

Are there actually very many people like that though?

This guy has some good stuff. The P5 Admins are sniping the G5 Admins.. Crazy times.

a good thread explaining the legal roadblocks to the players developing a formal union

essentially employees of PRIVATE employers can unionize - state schools aren’t private employers so athletes at these schools would not be eligible

between the covid pitchfork wielders and 'scholarships are enough compensation' lemmings, college football deserves whatever fate awaits it.

Cool, brother. Go out and get your protest on, turn on MSNBC, and wait for what your next move should be.

Hard to believe only 2 presidents want to play of the 14..

I don't believe that. Without football, MOST athletic programs in this conference will be cut outright. There's no widespread miracle vaccine coming by springtime.

I doubt any member of the BIG is going to cover that 50 million shortfall by raising tuition.

man there is so much in certainty in all 100 hypothetical things you included in your analysis i couldn't even keep reading after the first 50 hypothetical assumptions. i know there are some asymptomatic people getting tested but i dont know anyone who has got tested yet. the vast majority of asymptomatic people are NOT getting tested.
so are you saying people in sweden are not getting tested and thats why their numbers are lower?

Hyperbole much? What is it 100 hypothetical assumptions or 50?

Please list the hypothetical assumptions that are causing you to have issues.

Is it that average testing went from approx. 200 a day (being generous) in April and May to over 900 a day in July. Is that "hypothetical" too much for you to process?

As far as Sweden is concerned, I could not find any data on their testing per day. But on the chart below one can assume logically that the increase in June was a result of increased testing. I know this is one of the hypothetical assumptions you hate, but you can assume that because testing kits were scarcer in April and May than in June and July. You can use the USA as a proxy as we averaged around 200k test per day in April/May (higher end of the average skewed toward the end of May), 400K to 450K a day per day in June, and around 750K per day in July.

However, we do not need to rely on faulty case per day data to analyze the spread of the virus as Sweden does an excellent job of ICU analysis and reporting. Below you can see the number of new intensive care COVID positive cases per day. As you can see, the supposed June "spike" in cases is not confirmed by the intensive care data for June and July as the new ICU admissions kept decreasing through out June and July months. Date of death Covid data also backs up that the virus was actually decreasing through June rather than increasing as the faulty positive cases per day data shows.

I’ve got it! Here is how we can have a football season, we just need to rename it instead of football we call it peaceful protesters. So it the Nebraska cornhusker peaceful posters against the Iowa Hawkeye peaceful protesters

Because the 12 college presidents (if true), were out protesting all summer?

That part about the NFL watching what happens, has me thinking it's a perfect opportunity for them to create a minor league. You would have to do it very fast, and make things up as you went, but if they created a minor league, you would see athletes 'leave' schools in droves, especially if the schools are not going to play this fall. You could pay the players, up to a hundred grand each, and still make money hand over fist..
