i just caught a few minutes of it, but if I heard it right, some genius emailed the show. The emailer said he had watched numerous preseason NFL games, and hadn't seen any teams run the 3-4. He asked if no NFL teams are running the 3-4, how can we expect it to work in college/at Nebraska.

Benning was on the show and politely pointed out the World Champion Patriots, Broncos, etc, etc, run the 3-4. I honestly don't know how he kept a straight face.

I set the DVR for the replay but if anyone knows this person, please smack them with a 2X4.

It was on NET2 (in Omaha/Cox ch 1016). Replay is at 10 pm the regular NET channel according to my DVR.

What a coincidence. That's the same reason the option never worked at Nebraska in the 90's! No NFL was running it!

I can't image how good the option offense would have been in the 90's for us had some NFL teams been running it!

None at all. I am just curious. I wonder if they even get paid at all for it. It is super fine if you don't care how much they make for it. I just think it is an interesting line of work.

Oh no big deal...I didn't mean it that way. Big Red Wrap Up has been on for like, 15 years? Maybe more? It clearly is low budget I just wondered if those guys get anything for doing it. I sort of thought they might get 500 dollars a show?

In all fairness, I had a vision of what the 3-4 would look like and what I saw Saturday was not even close.

It's a 3-4 that has a base okie front that looks like a 5-2, with linebackers, and then it shifts around some too. Since ArkSt. Ran a lot of spread and Diaco kept in the base defense for 80/89 plays, we saw the players having to move around the field according to what needed covered, so it did kind of look weird at times, but that's just what it is. It's also a 2gap defense, but that's not a bad thing.

Ha. I had the same experience. I thought I was going to see an aggressive, attacking style defense, with press coverage and linebackers in space making plays and being disruptive. Instead I saw a passive, reactive defense, with linebackers in space who were frozen, not knowing whether to play the run or the pass, and our db's 15 yards away from the line.

It was, 3-4 just means you give up 30-40 points a game I think. So only the Browns seem to run it

I did read that article. And since my wife is a Notre Dame grad, I watched his defenses a lot the year they played Bama for the title. So I had all that in my head and was well aware of his no crease, bend but don't break approach. Lol. Which is why it was just stupid that I was hoping and expecting to see something more aggressive. I told my dad over the phone at halftime (who is 84 and thinks we should blitz on every play) that we were seeing Diaco's philosophy in play, however vanilla, and to get used to it.

So, using the same mensa logic as that caller, all these college football offenses running 75-85 plays per game should cut it out because NFL offenses only run about 65.

Yah I mean scheme is not going to paper over roster deficiencies. I expect as the players get more experienced the secondary will tighten up. If the general goal is to keep everything in front of you.... almost no coach I'm aware of takes a young secondary and puts them in a position to get beat on the 2nd step.

Consider the questions we on the board had when diaco was hired.

1. Who on the roster will play NT...we didn't have any. They more or less made one out of mick and DT.

2. Who exactly was going to play OLB? This was the harder question IMO because you can't just tell a guy to gain weight and hope it works.

Dealing with the issues caused by two will be problematic all year long I would gather. If we trot out more nickel personnel teams will audible to more run matchups. If we roll out a base alignment, they can audible to a bubble screen type of deal. It does t guarantee we won't have our successes but it will give the advantage to the offenses.

So now the natural question....if we were lacking a couple key pieces to the three four.... why switch.

Because personnel are personnel. Playing a 4-3 without top shelf DEs isn't going to net us any advantage than we find ourself in now. A 4-3 doesn't magically make our secondary more experienced and allow them to press every play. Newby can still be abused in space and there still is the fundamental choice of rolling out the nickel or newby against a particular offensive look that can be audibled.

So you might as well rip the band aid off and get cracking

If you have the Wisconsin game go watch that. They had the same issues we had with the LB. if they dropped into coverage they got dunked and dunked.

After a while Wisconsin stopped dropping those LBs and just left them across the front to rush.

I imagine that we will do similar things (to include playing non base personnel) going forward. It's anyone's guess why we were so locked into a grouping. We certainly practice those things

I am well aware of the D and alignment and the different looks it can present. Have done several lower level HS coaching. But I have never seen a Doctor look like that both in formation and pre snap technique combined. Just different and it make look different again Saturday. I am taking the wait and see approach.
