Big Bama OT N!! Official

No Nebraska needs serious help at OT.
And why is that? People, especially in the media, have been saying this. And over time, it's gone from being talked about as a need to now it's a serious need in the minds of many. But nobody says why. We've got some tackles in the program already going on their 2nd or 3rd year. Are all of these guys obvious busts? Or is there concern that we're too young at that spot?

The same media types were gravely concerned about Gunner Gottula as well. I suspect that some of these guys don't really have any idea what they are talking about.

I think it’s more of a bridge year to get our young guys one more year. I’m sure they are serviceable but getting an extra boost to help them to third year is the push IMO.

My biggest concern is depth. Which everyone agrees we lack on the offensive line. Especially at tackle

I was sort of wondering the same thing so I looked at the top rushing teams this year. I didn't look at the service academies or mid majors, so looked at #8 Boise St, #9 Tennessee and #11 Notre Dame. Here is the class category of their starting and backup offensive lines this last year:

Boise St - (from left tackle to right tackle) SO, SR, JR, SO, SO; backups FR, JR, JR, SO JR

Tennessee - SO, SR, SR, SR, SR; backups SO, RFR, FR, SR. SR

Notre Dame - FR, SO JR, JR, SO; backups SR, FR, FR, FR, FR

So it looks to me like Boise and ND do just fine with underclassmen on their offensive lines. For the last three years we have recruited linemen we were excited about (e.g. Brix). Why do we need portal guys, can't our sophomores and RFRs play?

If you look at Nebraska on paper at the end of the year we aren’t that different.

Nebraska- FR, SO, SR, JR, SR: backups FR, FR, FR, FR, FR

I think their short answer is the injuries to Corcoran and Teddy have hurt. We just don’t have much at OT. We are also taking, or trying to take portal players at the majority of positions. That is just the way of college football now. Oregon just took two OT’s from the portal, Ohio State has taken two. Michigan and LSU are still looking for portal OT’s.

It's also the main reason we lose transfers to other schools.

NIL giveth and taketh away.
No it's not, except in rare cases like maybe Dowdell. We could have put together competitive offers for any of the players we lost. They left for other reasons. Dowdell is an exception because we valued him less than some other schools, and it's an assessment I agree with.

I'm fine with adding some pieces from the portal, but if Donovan is worth even a fraction of his salary, he should be able to develop talent from within the program.

Apparently he wasn't very good last year. Remains to be seen how he will do here. Has all the tools for sure.

Better than "depending" on Corcoran and Teddy I guess. Anything from those guys is extra I think.

I've said this repeatedly. We all were lead to believe that Teddy and Turner were "must have" guys all off season. We lose Teddy and oh shit we are in trouble. Lose Turner and my God just forget the season. GG comes in and plays and to the naked eye the kid is every bit as good if not better than 7th year and 8th year COVID Jrs 😂 😂.

Seriously though seen the same thing at CB. Guy gets hurt ,backup Wright comes in and Immediately he's out best CB.

Lose LBs in the portal..ok V9 shows up and says hold my drink .

Makes you question do any of these guys ever know WTF they are talking about. Do coaches just play guys they feel comfortable knows the plays regardless of if they are worth a shit or not??

Everything I have read indicates he was serviceable but his performance dropped precipitously the 2nd half of the year. Could be confidence issue or maybe he couldn’t catch up when the schedule became more SEC foes rather than out of conference. I don’t know. Maybe a nagging injury. Still, he started every game for Alabama so I guess you shoot for landing him and see which version of him shows up if he commits.

Absolutely..he's worth the risk. In our situation currently if if he's serviceable he likely better than what we have outside of GG. Hopefully the young guys make a jump. But imo it's imperative we don't go into the year with our wagons dependent on Teddy and Turner staying healthy
