Think outside the box:
Mike Leach
David Cutcliff
Holgy
Score points, make CFB interesting and fun again.
Mike Leach - Most old school Husker fans would hate having an offense that passes and NEVER runs. We have the passing QBs, so certainly it wouldn't be a horrible transition. We would have to get used to sucking early in the season and losing to bad teams. Would be interesting for the guy that hing 70 on Nebraska to be their coach though!
David Cutcliff - He is already 63. We were told that 62 was already told old when Riley was hired.
Dana Holgorsen - His record is 48 - 32 as a head coach. That's "only" a 60% winning percentage, which is like 7 or 8 wins a season average. His offense could put up points, but would it work in the B1G?
Gus Malzahn - He could be available at the end of the season from the sound of some of the Auburn fans. His offense loves a running quarterback, so we would be right back to a transition period. Currently his offense isn't doing so hot. He had one great year and hasn't won 9 games since.
Bret Bielema - Was he great... or was it just Wisconsin, seeing how he hasn't done great at Arkansas and Wisconsin hasn't skipped a beat since he left. If he could get us to where he had Wisconsin, hell yes. His records at Wisconsin: 12-1, 9-4, 7-6, 10-3, 11-2, 11-3, 8-5, so a 74% winning pct. He is 26-27 at Arkansas, but he is in the SEC West. Husker fans would put up with a 7 win season if he could win 10 or more every 2 out of 3 years on average.
Yes, we need a good head coach... but we need better coordinators, especially on offense apparently. Maybe since we are now willing to pay coordinators a million dollars a year, we should go get a new offensive coordinator that knows how to put up 45 points a game.
Oklahoma State has gone through some good OCs: Holgorsen left for West Virginia and Todd Monken left for Southern Miss. Mike Yurcich is their current OC. He spent two seasons at Division II as offensive coordinator before OSU. Does Gundy have an offensive system that his coordinators must learn? Or do the coordinators run their offense? Who knows, but their offense has been putting up points for quite a few years now.
How about the top offenses in all of FBS? Maybe one of the OCs from a non-power 5 school would come fix our offense. Sometimes one of those guys really is good, other times... not so much.
Todd Fitch's offense (LATech) put up a lot of points per game last year, but that offense put up 37 pts/game the 2 years before he arrived.
Tony Franklin (Mid Tenn) has a history of putting up points, but he is already 60 now. He has had one or two bad years in the last 15 years. When his offense has talent, his teams put up points.
You would think we could find someone to take the job and put up 40 points a game, but maybe not. Riley probably should have changed OC when he changed DC, but I don't see him getting rid of Langsdorf because that is the offense that he himself likes to run. Too little, too late, unless there are major improvements the rest of the season (not likely).
