I'll be heading there in about a month or so. Just looking to get some tips on some of the best places to eat, and where the best steak is at. I prefer the opinion of local and don't like relying on reviews online, because most people just are there to #$#$ about stuff.

Please and thanks! GBR

Good question, I went to Mahogany last year on one of my visits but wasn't impressed, but it could still be a good one for Omaha.

Farmer Brown’s in Waterloo is the best steakhouse around and they give you generous portions and are reasonably priced..

Best Mexican would be Maria’s in Ralston which is a suburb in Omaha..

Man I could not disagree more. It was about 10 years ago when we ate there and I dubbed their brown sauce butt gravy, and to this day all of us know what I'm referring to when I say butt gravy. None of us cared for it but I know it's an institution and we are in the minority. El Bee's would be my choice between the two.

Maria’s has better soft taco shells by far if you like taco’s...

Brother Sebastian's and The Drover are the excellent "old timey" steakhouses in Omaha. Gorat's is not good.

Downtown has some great ones. Monarch is amazing, and the 401 Chophouse and Spencer's are good, too.

Mexican? Go to South Omaha. Maria's is NOT good. It's...unique, but not good.

What do you think is the best for a date scenario?

Mahogany, The Drover, 801 Chophouse are the big ones for steakhouses.

Farmer Brown's and Around the Bend are great if you aren't looking for a high end steakhouse feel and want more of a small town Nebraska steakhouse feel.

I have never really been impressed with El Bees food. Their margaritas on the other hand are amazing (but be warned, they'll knock you on your ass).

*801 Chophouse, Monarch, and Spencer's are flashy and neat. Also Sullivan's downtown. So, they are impressive, newer, definitely have more of a big city feel.

The Drover is not open yet, but will be soon, and Brother Sebastian's is great...they are both relics of 60's and 70's "theme" steakhouses; The Drover is western themed, Brother Sebastian's is like a monastery. It's neat, but kinda kitschy.

I'd say go downtown; the Old Market has great bars to go along with the steakhouses/restaurants down there.

Cocktails would be good at: Laka Lono (tiki bar), Wicked Rabbit ( a PDT-style speakeasy), Mercury, and a number of other great bars.

Pretty sure "Wicked Rabbit" is a vibrator and you're prolly confused.

Thanks a lot guys, you've been a huge help. We'll be there for a few days, so we are going to try and hit as many places as possible.

Back in my younger days, we used to go to the GI Forum on 20th and N. That place was pretty authentic for a Midwest Mexican place. If it is still open, I would give it a shot.

801 Chop House, not sure if it is still there, but Omaha Prime was good and Flemings is a good choice.

801 is still there, Omaha Prime is gone I think. Flemings is good but its not near anything else that is great.

I'm not sure why we're talking steakhouses; clearly, the best and most luxurious food available is that chosen by our Dear Leader to reward sports champions. Go get some McDonalds!

Tiny little place, might be hard to find, Sizzler, not sure if you have heard of it. They do a really nice steak and good prices. Mexican is a bit tougher but I say that for your money it will be tough to pass up a local joint called Taco Bell.
