Giving good teams that dont make many mistakes 5 to 7 yards a pop does nothing but give them long drives, keep our offense off the field, and wear out our defense. If we are to become bowl eligible this year we have to quit conceding the run to prevent the big play. We have to quit giving them the short stuff in hopes that they fumble or something along the way. Use 5 or 6 down lineman, blitze a linebacker and play man coverage elsewhere every down. We probably would get burned deep 4 or 5 times a game but taking 2 or 3 seconds away from the quarter back might cause a couple int as well.8 defensive backs are not effective when the QB has time to drink a glass of tea while he waits for a target. McBride's defense in our glory years, was a wall, and he didnt do it with a 3 man front. Our defense now is not developed enough to stop everything so we just need to stop something. Out number and attack them in the trenches and take our chances over the top and maybe we go to a bowl game. At least we wouldn't suffer the slow methodical death we suffered the last two weeks

Agreed. It works against so-so teams that can't consistently sustain drives. But won't win you a championship. Sadly at this point, it really doesn't matter since we are not in the conversation.
If we ever get the horses, we'll need a different scheme.

I think one of our issues in the 80's was a bend but don't break philosophy. Some other issues as well but getting rid of that approach helped a lot.
