i don't watch much mlb but just saw the royals base runner called out on a steal after a replay that showed he popped off the bag for an instant while the late tag was still touching him...dumb. It was a clear stolen base. It's nearly impossible to pop up after running at full speed with out going a little airborn. Toronto just got rewarded when they did nothing right. End of rant.

wasn't there a similar outrage when the royales played the astros? i agree. replay is a disaster at this point and should be abandoned until they find people who can make the right calls.
Yep, Terrance Gore stole third base, beat the throw by a mile. Astros asked for review, and on replay he VERY briefly popped off the bag, and call was overturned. Stupid thing was, it still wasn't clear on the replay if the tag was actually still being applied when his foot popped off, it looked like it wasn't, and it actually looked like the third baseman kinda bumped him, causing him to pop off. Regardless, it didn't appear clear enough to overturn the call, and it was a clear misuse of what replay was intended for.
Royals have also benefitted from replay a couple of times this post season. That said I agree the call today was dumb and just goes against the spirit of the game. I also don't know how to fix it because if you open that up for more interpretation from the ump I think you can open pandoras box a little bit.
I've never liked replay in baseball. Sure, there was an occasional disastrous call but I think it adds to the drama and we got the occasional manager meltdown for the highlight reel.
Robots as umps would be fine after seeing this blind jackass call balls and strikes tonight

It's no different than someone overrunning a base. They have to stay on it. If a replay shows he is out-- call him out. Replays were put in place to get the call right. If a replay can show a receiver dragging his toe and getting called in bounds on a catch, or a replay showing a ball was trapped and the catch was not made, that's fine if they get the call right. Sorry but if he is off the base and is tagged he is out. That's the rule. I understand others may disagree.

The ump's are a joke calling balls and strikes. People say they just want consistency. The problem is there isn't consistency. The should be consistency not just from one ump but across baseball. Go to a freakin' machine to call balls and strikes. This having to guess what's a strike depending on the ump, the ump's positioning, the ump's disposition, etc. is a joke. I just watch in amazement how a true borderline pitch is called a ball and then shortly after an obvious ball is called a strike or vice versa. Plus the umps think they're hot-sheet when anyone dares to question their authority. Baseball umps are the worst.
As for the base stealer popping up, I think if you're off the base at any time and a tag is on you, you're out. Don't pop up slide if it's a problem.
Umpire calls are part of the game. Always have been. Don't mess with tradition, especially when it comes to baseball. The sport is making a nice comeback since the roid-era. Don't mess it up.
roboumps would be a giant improvement to the game. i'm sorry, but 40, 50, and 60 year old men are not good at determining if a ball traveling at 95 MPH did or did not cross the plate. They are merely guessing/deciding based on how the catcher catches it, how the batter reacts, who is pitching, who is catching, who is batting, and several other things that bias what he decides.
As bad as he was last night, he was still better than Hirschbeck the other night. That was brutal.
Disagree. Part of taking a base is that you must maintain contact at all times. You lose contact and are being tagged you're out (and should be). What replay can't tell is if a defensive player pushes another player off the bag to instigate them losing contact...that's illegal.
I think umps being tyrants is great for the game. No matter what happens in society, in someone's life, in the game, in the world, in the universe, everyone can agree that the ump was the worst.
Yeah, if you get screwed it sucks, but it was always the ump's fault. I love that at every level except MLB, the game is completely at the mercy of the ump. IMO it makes the game dramatic. If all the guesswork and controversy is gone, it makes the game less exciting.
