Ok I have heard more than a few posters on here comment that Banker has not had very good pass Defenses while he was at Oregon State, and I "get that". The thing I am wondering about is, are people only looking at the final rankings and stats for his defenses, or are they actually getting the proper "perspective" as far as where his pass defenses have ranked in his own conference, and taking into consideration how much of a passing conference he is coming from?
As an example: if we only look at Oregon States National ranking as far as their Passing yards allowed defense last year with a ranking of 91st, most would say "Wow not a very good pass D".
BUT, are you taking into consideration how good of a passing conference the Pac 12 is? Are you taking into consideration where OSU was ranked within their own conference compared to other teams in passing yards allowed? Probably not.
91st doesnt seem like a great yards allowed number until you look at what the other Pac 12 teams rankings were last year:
8th Stanford
90th Utah
91st Oregon State
93rd UCLA
100th Colorado
103rd Arizona St
108th Oregon
115th USC
118th Arizona
120th Washtington
124th Wash St
125th Cal
OSU had the 3rd best passing yards allowed as a D last year upper half of the conference and that is compared to a LOT Of teams with more talent than they have.
If we look at Pass efficiency D last year as well we get:
6th Stanford
38th USC
54th Oregon
56th OSU
60th UCLA
77th Utah
83rd ASU
100th Washington
102nd Arizona
114th Colorado
116th Cal
122nd Wash St
Oregon State graded out at 4th in the Pac 12 conference in Passing effec D.
Keep in Mind the Pac 12 that year had 6 teams ranked in the top 25 in passing offense, and 8 teams (9 if we count OSU) ranked in the top 50 in passing offense.
Now compare that with the B10 that same year: The B10 had 0 teams ranked in the top 25 in passing offense, and only two teams ranked in the top 50 (MSU at 35th, and Illinois at 48th)
That is quite a bit of a difference, and you will find that those numbers passing wise are pretty consistent with both conferences as far as passing offense goes.
Now the year before 2013-14 OSU struggled a bit in Pass yards D they were ranked 8th in their conference and 84th overall, and in pass effic. D they were ranked: 71st and 7th in conference, so they struggled a bit.
Now in 2012-2013 year
OSU was 49th in the country in Passing defense, which was also 3rd in the Pac 12, and they were 20th in the country in Pass Eff D, and 3rd in the Pac 12 as well.
Mind you this is being done in a conference that is a very pass happy D. These are pretty good numbers being put up by a D that lets be honest, is certainly not anywhere near top tier in their conference talent wise.
In 2011-2012 OSU was 46th in Passing D which was 2nd in the Pac 12. Again, not bad numbers.
So after all this, I would contend that maybe just looking at Bankers overall rankings and pass D and pass eff numbers, is kind of doing a disservice to what the actual "reality" is, as far as how good the Pass defenses he has put on the field the last few years, and maybe those "overall Rankings" are skewed in peoples minds a little bit.
For perspective with the lack of talent they get at OSU, and how pass happy of a conference they play in, Bankers Passing defenses have been ranked in the top 2,3-4 of his conference in 3 out of the last 4 years, with arguably bottom half of the conference type of talent.
I would consider that pretty good coaching, and pretty good rankings for his pass D with all things being considered. IMHO> Just something to think about.
