Looks like they have 4 years of Martinez/Armstrong hybrid. After 8 years, I'm excited to see something new.

What a game. That's gonna be a Top 5 game of all time. Clemson takes down the King. Amazing what good QB play can do for a team... excited for the future of the position at Nebraska. GBR!

Well, since you do know, please elaborate. What do you know that the rest of us don't know?

Armstrong accounted for 1/4 of the rushing yards in 2016 (23% if ya want to get technical and he was ineffective in one game and didn't play another). That's gone. There will be no threat of the QB run next year making it much easier for the opposing defenses. A coaching staff that does not know how to effectively run the ball along with a porous offensive line. So to me it looks like somewhere between 5-7 and 7-5.

Thanks for sharing. You might be right. Having said that, Armstrong accounted for a 33% completion rate in our 3 losses (in the games he played in), and just over 50% overall in the season. The offensive line will be better, and a QB who can complete 55% minimum (I expect better than that) by being more effective with presnap reads and going through progressions will make our run game more effective. Looks like 9 or 10 wins to me...

Guess we will have to wait until this fall to see who is right.

I would like to be optimistic becuase just like all on this board, I want to see a very successful football program again but from what I have seen I am sorry I can't share your optimism and it seems NU is spinning it's wheels and wasting time again. I admire your optimism though.

and 9 or 10 wins? That is optimistic. I think they drop at least these four: Oregon (lots of talent and hired great coaches), Wisconsin, Ohio State and Penn State.

Hard to argue against this, and I am generally optimistic when it comes to the huskers. Those four will be tough games, and we could lose them all. Just not sold on Oregon yet, and I am hopeful that we nip Wisconsin at home for the 10th win if we make it that far. I think we will learn a lot about these coaches this next year, namely, if they are worth their salt. Not necessarily a make or break year, but we should finally get to see behind the curtain a little more than the first two years. And if we are seeing the same things as the first two years, my optimism will take a hit moving forward.

Don't they have two other QB's who are freshman? I think that the other QB is a Jr. and was ranked #3 in 2013, at least I think that I heard this on the radio.

I'd take him over ANYONE on our roster--let BAMA have their pick. You know what you would hear when u propose said trade..... NO THANKS

The season opener is looking like a loss to me.
Ooooh, good call... 8-5 Arkansas State is gonna come in to Lincoln and leave with a victory.

Huh? You do know this is a football thread, right? Not baseball, where we actually could drop the season opener? No chance we lose to Arkansas state.

Uh oh. Hope that isn't the curse/jinx!

We should win that game, but if we lose, I will place all the blame on that comment. :)
And if we lose I will take most of the blame, but I feel compelled to place at least a smidge on nebraskafan as well for making me post what I posted. ;)

Run the ball no, scramble, move up in the pocket & throw it out of bounds to avoid a sack, yes. I'll take the latter.

He appears more capable at reading the defense and making good decisions with the ball as a freshman than either Martinez or Armstrong were after several years. And, if he doesn't, I doubt Saban will hesitate to make a change, unlike the coaches in Lincoln. (granted we haven't really had much of an alternative in Lincoln which probably isn't an issue for Saban)

Sorry, but putting Armstrong and Martinez's names anywhere near Alabama is an insult to Alabama. These guys wouldn't sniff the field in their league.

Hurts was plenty good enough at QB until they played Clemson - he was up against a great college QB in Watson so hard to shine. He made the play to win the game if 'bama's D gets one last stop.....so not like he was terrible. He struggled - but no big mistakes. In part I think Sark called a crappy game - did not trust Hurts - amazing they got 31 points off so few yards (turnovers and field position matter....alot).

Exactly why our special teams play has to get better starting next year.

I was listening to the sports radio guys this morning talk about how they couldn't believe how bad Clemson's starting field position was, yet they were able to sustain long drives on "the best defense ever in college football history."

Any offense will do better when you can start around your own 40 instead of your own 20.

Imagine that. Another "Newbie Husker Fan" bashing our program in the days leading up to national signing day. Is he another Pelini relative or just a fan of a team competing with us for recruits.

Not like he was terrible...

I know he didn't turn it over, but look at his stat line: 13/31 for 131 yards passing with 1 td, 68 of those yards came on a busted coverage. QBR of 25.2. He did rush for 63 yards on 10 carries, 1 td rushing.

I want to believe he didn't play terrible but his stat line tells me he was very TA like and if he throws a little better then Bama wins, in my opinion.

It's not the true freshman's fault they lost, but I would say he didn't play very well all things considered.

Seriously, if this stat line were Tommy's, would you be on here saying he didn't play terrible?

Well they do bring a rivals 5.9 4* QB with them. The kid was national no 6 pro style qb in the 2014 class.

He accounted for 200 yards, two TD's and no TO's...And he gave them the lead with 2 minutes left and they scored 31 points and it was the first time that Bama, under Saban, let up a 4th Q lead and they were up by 14!

Clearly the defense lost it for them.

I hope you arent serious with that post. The pathetic offensive display killed their defense. You can't expect the D to stay on the field the entire second half and not get gassed.

It is easy to say by the stat line he had a bad game. 2 things hurt him - drops and Sark calling rollouts that had one read (then run) that Clemson defended well over an over again only to have Sark call that play again and I think he just ran it one more time...... Hurts threw the ball away several times because he had no play on that rollout. If Sark goes to something else - screen game or more runs, QB draw - I think 'bama would have been better off as an offense. Clemson played them pretty darn well and still gave up 31 points....bama offense got the lead with 2 minutes to play. Not enough to hold off Watson & Co. - and yes 90+ snaps by Clemson took a toll on bama D by end of the game.
