ASU DT in the Portal, kind of

There was a guy earlier today, maybe from Miami, who simply threatened to put his name into the portal. Something about a new transfer to the team getting more money than he got. He gave the program 24 hours....

Yes, indeed, this immediate transfer and NIL stuff is great. It's like professional sports now except players can declare themselves free agents whenever they want. No contracts.

And now the best returning WR in the nation is leaving probably leaving Pitt to go to USC. The kid already had an NIL deal and everything in place for a great final season. Now he's leaving for, you guessed it, a better offer. I'm guessing more money and not having to do anything for it other than play football. But don't worry... Lincoln Riley is suspected of asking a former HS buddy on the Trojan team to make first contact with him so no rules were broken. Right?

Football players should be university employees, not scholarship athletes. Should they choose to attend school, during or after their football careers, then good for them. Make sure their salaries are enough to also pay for school if they choose to do that.

Sign them to one- or two-year renewable contracts, and free up the 85 scholarships and start a men's soccer team, a men's hockey team, a men's swim and dive team, etc. Have the NCAA increase the limit on baseball scholarships to 20, as well.

It would be nice to say that this and all of the other examples of what’s going on with the portal and the name image and likeness are results of unintended consequences or lack of forethought. The reality is anybody who could think saw this coming. But because we don’t have actual adults in charge mentally, just by age these are the results that we get.

It's a new world. Would be very hard to put the genie back in the bottle now IMO once the players have gotten a taste of the portal+NIL. All kinds of player rights lawsuits would be filed.

Why do you think Mark Emmert resigned from NCAA head. This NIL situation totally sucks. NIL needs to be capped at $50K and the NFL needs to draft high school seniors in new round 15-30 and make the SEC the new farm league for pro football and let the 4+ remaining conferences play college football.

It is not "ruining" it...
It might make it less fun for you, the fan, but not for the players.

Yah the whole thing is going to be a mess. I am trying to wrap my brain around where this will go. Professional sports have attempted to employ mechanisms to level the playing field like salary caps and luxury taxes. Players have collective bargaining agreements and unions. None of this fits into the NIL model because schools aren't paying this.. at least directly. It's a huge can of worms and it's not going to end well imho.

Totally agree with you. The ASU DT in the Portal is definitely going to be interesting to see how it all plays out. The whole NIL model is a complex issue, and it's hard to predict where it will lead. It's true that professional sports have implemented measures like salary caps and luxury taxes to level the playing field, but with NIL, it's a whole new ballgame. Schools aren't directly paying athletes, so it's not like traditional contracts with unions and collective bargaining agreements. It's a can of worms for sure, and online sextortion could be another potential challenge in this evolving landscape.

One of the many things to dislike about the NIL but everyone has to deal with it so it isnt a one way street....If a player is also a good kid and has some equity with the coach and school...gets good grades, etc etc then you try to make it happen for him. If he's a headcase who's had one foot out the door for a while and the juice is no longer worth the squeeze you pat him on the back and wish him well.

So I did end up researching this dude, he ended up transferring to Louisville and got injured in the first or second game and was done for the year. This after being out for all of 2021 as well. So Louisville probably paid big bucks for basically nothing

I liked college sports better in the old days too. But if we're going to turn back the clock, let's go back to when head coaches made $120K, provided they also taught a PE class. And one of those coaches often served as the AD as a side gig, to make another $20,000 or so.

Big money may indeed have destroyed college sports, but it happened way before NIL or the transfer portal.

What's the point of necro-ing a one year old thread about a guy who hasn't played for various other schools in over 2 years?

Couldn't find one about Keyshawn Johnson Jr?

If you're trying to start a rumor about this guy transferring, then grow a sack and post it.

Karma. Traded long term success for short term pleasure.

I personally tend to think it was an intentional decision by NCAA admin to say "screw it. I'm tired of fighting the battle. Give them unlimited transfers and unlimited NIL. Let's see how America like that. A few years of insanity and they will be begging us to rein it back in."

the fact the states decided without consulting the NCAA, which had been actively lobbying for years to the tune of 8 figures annually in hopes of preventing it, says all you need to know about where the NCAA sits in all this

basically right next to us message board posters
