From NU media relations:

Nebraska seniors Tommy Armstrong Jr. and Nate Gerry were named to watch lists for prestigious national awards on Tuesday.

Armstrong Jr. was among the players named to the watch list for the 80th annual Maxwell Award, given to America’s College Player of the Year since 1937. Gerry was among the defensive players named to the watch list for the Bednarik Award, which has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995.

The 6-1, 220-pound Armstrong has guided the Nebraska offense each of the past two seasons. Last season, Armstrong threw for 3,030 yards and accumulated 3,430 yards of total offense and 29 touchdowns (22 passing, seven rushing). Armstrong has made 33 starts in his Husker career and enters the 2016 season in position to threaten Nebraska career records for passing yards, passing touchdowns, total offense and total touchdowns.

Armstrong is one of 12 Big Ten players named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award.

Gerry is the most experienced returning player for the 2016 Nebraska Blackshirt defense. The 6-2, 220-pound Gerry has played in all 39 games over the past three seasons with 29 career starts. Gerry has 199 career tackles and is in position to rank second in school history in tackles by a defensive back. He also has nine career interceptions, five away from the NU school record. Last season, he led Nebraska in both tackles (79), interceptions (five) and pass breakouts (seven).

Gerry was among a group of 16 Big Ten defensive standouts on the watch list for the Bednarik Award.

Watch list announcements will continue throughout the next two weeks, with the watch lists for the Rimington Trophy (Center) and the Mackey Award (Tight End) unveiled on Wednesday.
