Is anyone else worried about our extra points and field goal kicking next season? I for one am thinking that it will either costs us some wins or allow us to be 500. We have been spoiled for years now with good kicking. What I saw at the Spring Game was really poor kicking. Are any of the coaches excellent kicking technic coaches?

Anyone else’s thoughts?

Im more worried about the offense, the defense, recruiting, social meeting postings by recruits, too many Jucos, too few jucos, losing anyone in the 500 mile radius, taking too many guys just because they happen to live in the 500 miles radius, too much attrition, the lack of attrition, too much reliance on graduate transfers while not getting enough gradutate transfers, gebbias weight, martinez’s health, payouts to former coaches and ADs, car licensing of current staff, the lack of yoga pants threads on here, scheduling being too tough in 2018 and too easy in 2020, Miles, Erstad, the potential retirement of Cook in 5 years, and the fact that I took my car in for service last week nly to have the service department lose a key fob and deny any knowledge of it.

I agree that the kicking game is important. Very important and should be an area of concern just like any other position. But I think it's a little bit early to be worried. As thorough as Frost and Co are, I don't think they have ignored this area.

ALL of this

I know it takes some talent, but to me, kicking is like bowling. If you practice this enough, doing this same thing every day, you will eventually get really good. It is like being in the NBA and only having to shoot a 3-pointer from the corner, no dribbling, passing, or playing defense. It is like being an MLB pitcher and only needing to throw a 90mph strike down the middle.

It is a valid concern and it does look iffy this year. Bu as artguy pointed out, practice will make a kicker better and they can improve. The real ceiling is on distance. Hopefully our guys are going to camps and clinics and getting some kicks in with pros amd coaces this summer.
My hope is that someone emerges who is automatic from 35 in. All extra points as well.
Anything 35 and above would be bonus. It was only spring but I didnt see a kicker who could do that. But with work it could happen.

I’m worried about supporting 9 kids on a McDonald’s salary. So “worried” is a bit strong a word.

Stopping payment of $10 / month to rivals to post on a free board might ease your worry. Better yet, stop posting altogether and get a second job.

I think you may be paranoid. But the lack of yoga pants threads is a dire concern.

As far as kicking, let's hope the kicker needs only make PATs and the "high-powered offense" makes FGs unnecessary :)

2018 kicking might be an issue, but hopefully not in 2019 as games are hopefully won by 2TDs or more...

Kicking and kickers only get noticed when the kicking game is bad.

On the punting side, we should be really good. But I hope we don't have to punt too many times.

Seems like people were concerned about this too when Alex Henery and Brett Maher graduated. And many people were convinced Drew Brown was not going to be very good based on how he did early in his freshman year. Of course, we can't always assume that we're going to have good kickers, but it's not like we haven't been in this position before.

I was just about to write the very same thing !!!!!!!!!!!!

It takes a different mental make up to be really good though. There are tons of examples of really good kickers that completely lose it from the head up and become worthless.

Don't look for this Frost team to have to punt but only a couple of times this year. LaughingLaughingLaughingLaughing

Are you sure about that? Winking

I’m hoping Pickering is legit. Sounds like he was one of the best kickers in the country last year in high school. But like Lightbourn, he might have an up and down season his freshman year. Yep, I’m guessing we will be starting a true Freshman at kicker this year. Maybe Lightbourn can handle kick off duties too?

No clue why SOME are giving the OP crap. It’s a legit worry, we all know how important it is to having a good place kicker. I think We have gotten to used to having one of the best kickers in the BIG10 every year that we don’t even think about it anymore. This year we are about to start a true freshman, thankfully he was considered a very good high school prospect. Or with any luck, maybe Lightbourn can be our next Alex Henry and go both ways.

In regards to the OP, I think a quote from the movie Apollo 13 is quite appropriate.

"Now listen, there's a thousand things that have to happen in order. We are on number eight. You're talking about number six hundred and ninety-two."

I don't know you but I love you!

There needs to be a new rule that only quarterbacks can kick field goals or extra points. It annoys me when two football teams battle all day and the game comes down to Lewis from Revenge of the Nerds kicking a ball. Sorry. I'm sorta joking.

Welp... You probably aren't going to like my "Thoughts" on this.

1. As much as the kicking game matters, it is at the moment an afterthought. We need to focus our attention on getting the ball in scoring position right now, and the kicking game will follow.

2. Ummm... we haven't been spoiled at anything since 1997. We have had a "good" (Not Great) field goal kicker for a long time now, but it has been absolutely irrelevant, because our football team has stunk for over 15 years now. Spoiled and anything Nebraska football related for the last 20 years do not belong in the same sentence!

no the main kicker made all 7 kicks in the spring game and barely missed his lone field goal -off the upright.

To refine your argument... How about PATs (1- and 2-point attempts) have to be tried with the players on the field during the scoring play or a timeout has to be used to make a substitution (either side of the ball)?

EDIT #1: Other special teams plays that occur on normal downs (punts, field goals) and free kicks would permit substitutions.

This would be a neat wrinkle I think.

EDIT #2: Maybe throw in a caveat that if there is an injury (or "injury") on the scoring team, that substitute cannot be used in the battery of a traditional kicking formation (long snapper, holder, punter). Perhaps that's too far.

Cripes, I'm worried about everything. I'm worried my expectations for this season are too low. I'm worried they are too high. I'm worried about the lines. About the coaches. About the gameday weather. About why Fairbury hot dogs are an unnatural shade of red. About soda drips on my seat from the balcony above. About too many jucos. About not enough jucos. The scary clowns under my bed that whisper when I'm trying to sleep.

It all worries me.

Except for kickers and punters.....that shiz always works out.
