Another Husker article, this one from Grantland

Remember all the commotion about Callahan's West Coast Offense?

Riley's offense doesn't seem much different, but the local media hardly ever mentions it.

Not sure what you're implying... But objectively speaking, the style of offense Callahan used wasn't really the problem.

Callahan's offenses were very productive most of the time, his problem was his defense kept getting beat like they stole something. I'll take a pro style offense over Tim Beck's jack of all trades, master of none Spread Option every day of the week.

Not implying anything...I just remember in 2004 hearing WCO this, WCO that. I'm sure some of it was Callahan's self-promotion(ego). Remember the crowd reaction to the first play of the 2004 spring game with all of the shifting and motion and a deep pass? A statement was being made that the crusty old F---'s offense was a thing of the past. We all know how it worked out.

Riley's offense is quite different than the one Beck ran the past few years. Yet the local press hardly talks about it. Is it because Riley is such a nice guy?

cally's offense was usually MIA in the big games. I don't think we played any big games in 04 or 05, but neither O was any good. 04..whatever, no one cares. 05, the most we scored all year was 32. In 06, cally didn't even try and scored 10 vs usc, then 20 against texas at home, 28 at A&M, 7 vs OU, and 14 vs Auburn. In 07, 31 against USC (most of it in garbage time), 6 vs Missouri, 14 vs Okie Lite (all in garbage time), 14 vs A&M, 25 at Texas, and 39 at Kansas. Acting like we were some kind of offensive juggernaut under Callahan is silly.

I get what you're saying... IMO though, going from years of option offense to the wco was a pretty dramatic change, I think the feeling is that this isn't nearly as dramatic change. Seems as though Riley and Langsdorf are willing to adapt to what Tommy does and has done best, as opposed to Callahan who tried to force Dailey to be something he wasn't. But it will be fun to see, I truly hope its successful.

It will be interesting to see, and I think we'll see it in game 1. BYU will give us enough of a challenge that we can't play vanilla or keep plays in hiding.

Really hope we still find ways for TA to run the ball. Rollouts, bootlegs, etc.
The option (as much as I absolutely love watching it) scares me to death when it's not the mainstay of the offense. Too many things can go horribly wrong if you don't run the option offense consistently.

Bootlegs are deadly if run correctly, and with Tommy that could be a huge weapon. Looking forward to seeing if this becomes more prevalent.

We sure do. The crusty old offense is dead. Lots has happened in the last decade and a half, but the Osbone hasn't returned and nowhere does it seem to on the horizon.
