America's Pimp just died

Loved Hef. Definitely a visionary. A maverick. You kids won't appreciate him as there are pictures of naked girls all over the internet. In Hef's prime he gave the American man something he could not find anywhere else. Going to high school in a small town in Nebraska in the seventies Playboy along with Time and SI were must reads. They were a portal to the rest of the world. Sure we all looked at the pictures, but go back and look at all the great writers that contributed to Playboy. The monthly interview was typically something you read as well. RIP Mr. Hefner

I think Hef did a lot of innovative stuff, and was definitely a style and cultural leader for men in his prime. I'm talking the 1960's and 1970's. By the 1980's I think Playboy became an airbrushed parody of its former self. People could get better style and cultural stuff elsewhere, and for those interested only in the pictures, many more hardcore alternatives existed. Not surprisingly they've been in decline for 30 years. The Internet killed off the magazine just like every other type of printed media.

As Hef got older, he just seemed to get more pathetic with each passing year. I mean, c'mon, he was wearing the same smoking jacket from 50 years ago. From all accounts, the Playboy Mansion was a disgusting wreck of a house. He had four girlfriends, average age about 22, who obviously couldn't give a crap about him, and were just letting him hang around for money and fame. No 80 year old guy could keep up with a 22 year old girlfriend. At some point he could have probably gone gracefully into old age, but he still hung on. I actually started to feel embarrassed for him in the end.

But anyway, Hef, on behalf of me, and every other pubescent boy who had a stash of old PB's stuffed between their mattresses back in the 70's and 80's, I thank you.
