I'm honestly asking because I'm thoroughly confused about what's going on with our DLine.

We hire a coach that is supposedly perfect for us and I read an article where we might be losing two defensive linemen in Williams and McMullen. I don't follow the offseason that hard, so is this stuff that started BEFORE parella for completely unrelated issues?

A&M and Kentucky are both looking at Williams, so it doens't appear it's a situation where he sucks. what the hell is going on?

I am just guessing but I think McMullen stays. Williams played for Morrow in high school. Also I think Williams sees the writing on the wall in that he will not start at DT with McMullen moving inside. We have depth/talent at DT with Maurice, McMullen, Davis Twins, Stoltenburg, Newell....

He might see bigger minutes at Kentucky, not sure about A&M's DT situation. Also Williams has a history of injury problems which should be a concern for any program that has him. Maybe limiting his minutes a little bit would be better for him in the long run if it will keep him out of the Doctors office

You can thank Kaz.

Kid, it's time to quit bitching about being a starter, work your ass off, and get some notice by the NFL.

Where did McMullen transferring come from? I though Riley said he was coming back. Is this just speculation because he isn't at practice or is there some smoke here?

Williams isn't a shock to me. I was a little surprised he came back, to be honest. Not that he in't a solid player that we could use, but the handwriting has been on the wall with him for a while. McMullen on the other hand, would be a shock.

Riley said McMullen was staying in Lincoln. No idea of where Williams stands in relation to DavisX2, Newell or Stolt. But with those four plus KM and GMac, we are three deep at DTackle, with the option of playing Greg outside some. Maybe Williams is a pain in the ass and they aren't sorry to see him packing his bags.

If Williams didn't get hurt recently I doubt he would be here this spring. Williams moving on isn't surprising, don't think he meshed well with the staff, and Marrow wants him. I'm fine with him moving on because I don't think he would have started. I'd rather see those minutes go to Carlos or Khalil Davis.

Yep the talent level at DT is very good, IMO. But the depth is not and losing Williams and McMullen would make it down right scary.

Wasn't there information about McMullen that he's working on academic issues at the moment?

The thing that concerns me a bit is that once he takes some time off, gets more centered in academia, does he realize that his life SHOULD now be focused on excelling in the classroom, and he never comes back. I would be very happy for the kid that he had gotten himself focused on life after football, but...we need run stoppers in the middle too.

In this hypothetical, I'd have to be happy for him and move on. I enjoy football and want a national championship every year, but not at the cost of football over life skills.

Do you really believe McMullen is coming back??? When Riley made the press conference announcement I knew what was up.

It would seem the story is pretty straightforward re Williams. Injured, not happy, maybe tumbling down a bit on the depth chart. Wrt GMac, we can assume facts not in evidence and speculate, or take Riley at his word that Greg is coming back and he is just trying to square some things away so that he can spend his last year as a graduate student. The guy has four years in the program. He can afford to step out for the back half of spring ball and give those reps to the younger guys.

Some fans have their jump to conclusions mat's out...only going to make you look stupid.

Look at through McMullen's eyes: On your 3rd dline coach...been moved positioned. Likely won't play in pro's (but is a good college players). They're not even tackling in Spring practice. Hey, as long as he knows the calls, why not focus on school?

This mentality happens when you change coaches. All guys have to buy in but the new coaches understand these players came here under the premise of the former staff (not them).

And hopefully GM will be a pro about it and give it his all come Fall. I think he'll be fine.

So Parrella can't get them to buy in? These are Pelini recruits, supposedly smart and only "good" kids. I expect more.

It's not about buying in with a guy like McMullen. He bought in when he didn't leave when they fired his coach that brought him here. Also likely has 0 to do with Parrella. amazing that you bring Pelini into this again (but not surprised to read that you clearly still have expectations with that guy but none for the current...seems to be the prevailing leftover theme this message board just can't shake-or doesn't want to).

I agree w InWV in that he'll be a pro and give it his all next season.

Collins and Valentine left millions on the table by leaving early. The other guys aren't losing anything compared to them two. Nobody is talking Kaz's player's down.

With regard to McMullen, I haven't seen this discussed yet. Wouldn't finishing up his bachelor's degree this spring allow him to transfer to another program and play immediately?

I will be happy for him to have earned his degree and if he wants to move on (be it play somewhere else or hang it up completely), that's his prerogative.

I hope he's back this season, you can never have too many DTs. As someone else pointed out, he has plenty of live reps, we aren't tackling this spring, and this gives younger guys more reps with upper units.

Ummm... I was propping up Pelini and his recruiting of "good" kids, and questioning Parrella (saying I expect more). How exactly is that saying I don't expect anything from the current staff (even though right there in the post I said I expect more). Please try and keep up, or maybe you should just go back to your standard whining and complaining about the big meanies on this horrible site.

McMullen leaving is just an insinuation based on his "concentrating on academics" from what I've heard.

We are 3 over on our scholarship count, so anything is possible though. And who knows, this thread could turn into this year's "Ryker Fyfe" thread.

Except Ryker didn't take an excused absence from Spring practice last year???

...and that's a spring practice with a new position coach.

Riley's being a stand-up head coach and letting his player decide his own destiny.

Sometimes the best thing a good manager can do to motivate an individual and increase the morale of a workforce is to give the high-performing individual who may be burning out a little some down time.

Except Ryker didn't take an excused absence from Spring practice last year???

In reference to the summer when he was sick, seemed like there was a loooonnnngggg thread on here about him transferring, being cut, all types of conjecture.

Yet, Fyfe was here come fall ball. Stepping in for TA, being asked to throw the ball 50 times in his first career start. Being blamed by (some) fans for the Purdue loss. Being a walk-on, he was part of the "no-talent" blame for losses by (some) fans. All part of that 5 and 7 season that was last year.

So, I don't know who will leave and who will stay, not until they are actually gone.

Riley said McMullen will be here and I'll take him at his word until there is a reason not to do so. I have yet to hear that GM is unhappy in Lincoln and as for playing time, he'll get all he wants this fall.

Do you really believe McMullen is coming back??? When Riley made the press conference announcement I knew what was up.

Good to know you know exactly what is going to happen. I guess the rest of us weren't given that gift. Perhaps a network television series is in your future.

Exactly what Riley said.
