- On the opening Husker drive, Alonzo Moore takes 3 steps out of bounds after earning a 1st down on the Jet Sweep. A BYU defender hits him 2 yards out of bounds. That late hit has been called every time since I've watched Nebraska in the Big Ten.
- David Sutton has a pass thrown out of His reach. Ball is 3 yards over thrown and defender takes out his knee. One could argue that play actually deserved an ejection. It was right in front of the Field Judge. That play ha notoriously been called in the Big Ten.
- On the Hill touchdown run, I can't seem to figure out how ref who threw the flag, didn't call it offset. Both players were grabbing the facemask at the same time. It should've been offsetting.
- With Nebraska leading 28-24 at the 12 minute Mark of the 4th quarter, BYU had 372 total yards. That's not a great defensive effort, but the Huskers were playing good defense up to that point in the 2nd half. Mangnum comes in and they run a sweep to the Weak side of the field. It goes for 50 yards and was their only big run of the game by a RB. The play was well blocked by the LT and the WR who cracked down on Gerry. This created a traffic jam and allowed the back to hit the edge. But... Banderas likely makes the play after an 8 yard game, even though he's coming from backside pursuit. However, theBYU left guard, shoots free and trips Banderas with his arms. It was a legit tackle. Banderas got free, but it was too late and the back was already by him. This was right in front of the Back Judge, but if you watch his eyes, he was watching the running back, not his responsibility in the middle of the field. This should've been a 15 yard tripping penalty.
- Mike Riley and staff need a replay guy who reminds them to ask the ref to review a play.. The field judge missed 2 ball spots which set up 3rd and 1s where Nebraska didn't convert. I will give Bo Pelini some credit. He. Always knew when to ask for a review. Riley. Needs some work.
- The poor spot after a Reiley completion led to a terrible 3rd and 1 call with about 6 minutes to go in the 3rd. I want to think the spot was terrible and Langsdorf thought it was 3rd inches. It was actually 3rd and more than a yard and they called a QB sneak. A QB sneak is meant to get 6 inches, not a yard and a half. I truly think Langsdorf and Riley tight the spot was much closer than it really was. However, they failed to call the ref out for the poor spot. It deserved a review. And if not, the play call was just dumb. You don't call a QB sneak when you need 3.5 feet of distance.
- on the 3rd and 1 before BYUs comeback, the Cougars Blitzed right into the handoff. They clearly identified the look and sniffed out the play. People are quick to judge the oline in that situation, but the coaches set them up to fail. You can't run into the blitzers like that. Tommy needed to see it and call timeout.
Players who got lost in the loss:
Nick Gates- He was outstanding and the future is gonna be bright.
Ryne Reeves- only got beat once, and the play where the NT got hurt was when Reeves bent him over and showed him the 50 states.
WR- Moore, Westerkamp, Reilly - all 3 were terrific. Did Moore get hurt in the 2nd Half? I'm not sure why they stopped targeting him.
Dedrick Young and Banderas- both looked great, especially as open field tacklers.
Gerry - all over the field and clearly a okay maker.
- Dline vs the run. They allowed 2 big play s between the tackles, and as I mentioned earlier, the Hill TD should've been at least off setting penalties.
Rose-Ivey and Carter returns will be necessary vs Miami.
