I, in no way, underestimate the suffering experienced by the bombings and empathize with the survivors & relatives of the casualties.
But.....
It frustrates hell out of me when revisionists criticize / condemn wartime actions and completely neglect the realistic conditions under which those decisions were made.
For all of the tragedy of the 1/4 of a million Japanese who died & others who were hurt in the bombings, would anyone have chosen as a better alternative the millions (yes, plural) of Japanese who would have died in the inevitable invasion and ground war the Japanese War Lords wanted. And the bombings prevented.
I'm not for glorifying nuclear weapons, and proliferation needs to be stopped, but the irrefutable fact of the matter is they have saved far more lives than they took. The indisputable evidence: the last 70 years have given Europe the longest period of peace in forever.
That, ladies and gentlemen, is a fact.
