Rhule says the running game is the team’s biggest strength right now.

"I think we have as deep a running back room as I've ever been a part of," Rhule said in an appearance on Big Ten Network. "Anthony Grant, I think he had close to a 1,000 yards last year. Ajay Allen, the tremendously dynamic young player. Gabe Ervin, a big, powerful back. He's kinda been the star along with Rahmir Johnson for all of spring. Rahmir is dynamic, explosive, quick, fast. We have a young player — a redshirt freshman in Emmett Johnson who is really coming along right now. So, we have a really deep room. We have Trevin Luben — a walk-on player who we feel has done a really excellent job for us. I think we have five backs that can go in the game who we feel like we can win with.

Seems like every year before the season starts people think the running back room is loaded. Yet every year in the recent past it seems like that perceived pre-season RB depth vanishes during the season. Let's hope this season with a new staff is different for a change.

Finally some stability with depth at the running back position..

The RB's and O will only go as far as the O line takes us. All starts up front!!

would be nice to see E Johnson get some run this weekend.

his historical hs production has always been intriguing to me.

I don’t believe that’s been due to a lack of RB talent. It’s been play calling and O line play. I think Rhule fixes that. I’ve posted multiple times that some of our backup RBs could have run for 100/game on other B1G teams.

Yeah, kinda true. But maybe this year we will turn things around… in fact, I know we will

The season will rise or fall on how well both of our lines play and how much depth we can develop there since injuries are inevitable. I think we have skill position talent on offense and some speed and athleticism with the back seven on defense. But I am underwhelmed by Nash and Ty on the defensive line based on their past play, and it has to be proven on the field that we will have a real pass rushing threat from anyone. And I feel the same about the offensive line. Same coach and mostly the same players despite the addition of a transfer like Scott. Show me the potential All B1G players on either line, first or second team??

The fact is you never know how good you really are until you play another real team. If the offense is doing well in practice all it might mean is that your defense sucks, and vice versa. And if they go back and forth taking turns having the upper hand, then you still don't know. Maybe they are just both mediocre. A seasoned coach can get a feel for things however (e.g. Osborne saying "we have a chance to be good this year") and Rhule seems optimistic. But who knows? That could just be him trying to pump some confidence into guys who are used to losing.

We have won the offseason now several years in a row only to flop in the real season when we play real teams. It is time to put up or shut up. I am a Rhule Kool aid drinker. I really like this staff and they have given me some new found optimism. But until we see how our two lines play we simply cannot predict our season. We could go 4-8 or 10-2. It all hinges on the lines...

I am hopeful for the oline, if healthy. Scott, Nouelli, and Teddy P starting should be a decent upgrade over last year. Then the rest would be fighting for the last 2 spots.

Dline is a concern for me too.

I place little hope in Teddy. He is very injury prone. I hope he proves me wrong and stays healthy, because when he is healthy he is a really good lineman. Scott is unproven against anyone other than our own players. I know they have been talking up Benhart, but that is a huge "I gotta see it to believe it" moment for me. Same with Corcoran. Those two were both lousy last year.

Offense has some talent to work with. Many B10 teams would swap for our top 5 WRs and I think Fidone is a homerun if he stays healthy. Oline will be fine imo and our backs are good enough to move the chains. Sims and CT have plenty of experience as well.

Defense hasn't shown much of anything thus far - couple that with switching to 3-3-5 and we could have many issues this year on defense. I think they are as good as the DL can be which right now is a red flag.

Offense basically retained everyone but Trey. Then added Betts, IGC, Kemp, Gilbert, Fleeks, Sims, and Scott. Plus Nouelli.

Defense added some guys who haven't really played much.

“Scott started 28 games for the Sun Devils from 2020 to 2022 after redshirting in 2019. He started all four games at right tackle during the abbreviated 2020 season and all 13 games at right tackle in 2021. In his final season at Arizona State in 2022, Scott started 11 games at center.

In 2020, Scott’s play helped the Sun Devils rank seventh nationally in rushing. The next season, Scott was on the field for 794 of Arizona State’s 808 offensive snaps on the season. According to Pro Football Focus, Scott ranked 28th nationally in run blocking among all offensive tackles with at least 500 snaps.”

Yep. My bad. Good catch...

Yeah- we ranked 93rd in sacks allowed last year, and I imagine that’s similar for QB pressure allowed.
We have a problem there…. until we don’t.

Huge upgrade at center IMO.
