Do we have the LBs. could the Davis boys play DE in a 3-4?

People a 3-4 nose and a 4-3 nose have the same responsibility on nearly every snap! Almost no one runs a 2-gap nose on regular downs.

For sh!ts and giggles who plays OLB for us in a 3-4? Greg Simmons? Quayshon? Collin Miller?

"A drawback of the 3–4 is that without a fourth lineman to take on the offensive blockers and close the running lanes, both the defensive linemen and the linebackers can be overwhelmed by blocking schemes in the running game. To be effective, 3–4 linebackers need their defensive line to routinely tie up a minimum of four (preferably all five) offensive linemen, freeing them to make tackles. The 3–4 linebackers must be very athletic and strong enough to shed blocks by fullbacks, tight ends, and offensive linemen to get to the running back. In most cases, 3–4 OLBs lead their teams in quarterback sacks."

I'm betting we have the LB's to make it work. I don't know enough about the NT, but that link is a pretty good read to sort of get familiar with the 3-4 defense. My initial concern is that in the B1G, there are a lot of running teams. In the pros, not so much.

Scholarship LBs in 2017:

Quashon Alexander
Mohamed Barry
Tyrin Ferguson
Luke Gifford
Pernell Jefferson
Marcus Newby
Chris Weber
Greg Simmons
Dedrick Young
Willie Hampton
Avery Roberts
Andrew Ward
(Sorry if I missed any)

That will be at least 12 LBs to play.

Hopefully 3/4 pan out. If they do, should be plenty of decent to good depth for the 2nd string.

Here is a real link if you want to start to learn something about what real 3-4s look like:

Getting to slide 2 is enough for me.
--Play your best players--

This is it for me. I want a scheme that gets our best guys on the field. Dont the Ravens (Patriots too iirc) run kind of hybrid schemes? Some 3-4, some 4-3? Mostly getting their best damn players on the field and disrupt the offense.

We'll find out when the new DC is hired. The 3-4 speculation will either come to an abrupt end or it'll become reality.

Any preferred "realistic" candidates from yourself? Whole lot of speculation surrounding NFL names.

I believe the hire is all but official. No candidate from me, enjoying the speculation and suggestions.

It would be odd to can your DC without the new guy all but walking in the door the next day this close to signing day. A "meh" hire will be a botch, though.

A guy tweeted at Sean Callahan that there would be a news drop on the new DC tomorrow at 6pm. Have no clue who he is though, random nobody.

both sides of the ball are limited by player talent rather than scheme

these hires need to pay off in a couple of years based on recruiting results, the talent next year isn't going to be upgraded based on the hires. I'm not counting on huge improvement in the defense next year as the talent is what it is

They seemed to be teasing this possibility on Sharpe & Benning this morning. I guess I don't see where they have the DTs to feel good about that switch, but then again they don't have the DEs to feel good about a 4-3 either.

We actually have a couple of guys redshirting and commit Guy Thomas that would fit nicely that hybrid linebacker/DE that you need to play a 3-4 IMO. One of the reasons I posted a couple of days ago that I wasn't as nervous about our DE situation as some. Freedom has gotten big enough IMO to play the outside in a 3-4 in addition to the Davis twins. Stolt in the middle, Davis twins or Freedom on the outside. Quayshon, Miller, Newby, Thomas all present possibilities for backers. We've got the guys. But IMO we've got the guys to play the 4-3 this next year too.

Yeah, means he is trying to inflate his salary. Demand gets paid.

Maybe, but most of the time the threat of going to the next interview is enough to get the best offer. We talk all the time about coaches putting their names out there for jobs just to get a new deal. If Arkansas wanted Diaco bad enough they up the deal when he says I am on my way to Lincoln. Just like Denver did with Vance Joseph.
