1st year coaches

records in year one of "coveted" coaches...

Harbaugh at Stanford 4-8
Saban at LSU 8-4
Saban at Bama 7-6
Patterson at TCU 6-6
Briles at Baylor 4-8

Is Riley the guy? I don't know but history shows he needs more than 1 year
You could also add Stoops at OU. I think he was 6-6 or 7-5 his first year

that's a really good comparison, our status feels a lot like OU's did then. Remember beating John Blake 77-7? But I daresay, he left more in the cupboard. That guy was a recruiting machine.

How many of those programs won 9-10 games each of the 7 years before they took over?
Get over it! Bo was a dumpster fire. He's a big reason for the difficulties so far this season. Only idiots are calling for Riley's head 5 games into his first year. Saban or Meyer wouldn't be doing any better than Riley here considering what he inherited.

Ya, maybe by the time Riley turns 70 he will learn how to manage the end of a football game. Just give him time, we'll get there.

Wow. Saban, Patterson, Briles, and Stoops? That's not a reach, that's a voyage to Mars.

In each of the above examples, it was clear almost immediately that those coaches were bringing new energy and confidence to those programs. The players were having fun, recruiting was improving, and a clear upward trajectory was apparent.

What are any of you seeing about Nebraska's current program that suggests future success? Except for a good QB recruit (the one they've managed to hold onto), recruiting is very average right now. The team has no confidence, they are hanging their heads, and the trajectory is clearly down. Both coordinators stink. I wouldn't want to play for either one of those guys, because so far their planning and adjustments have been terrible.

Sinking ship, yes. Suggestions of future dominance no.

Couldn't have said it better. It's amazing how dilusiinal some fans can become.

Actually Harry Caray makes a good point, even when you take out the Bo factor...
How many of those teams were coming off 'winning seasons' when they hired their new head coach?
I don't have the answer, but my guess is... none of them.

So far to me it looks like some serious regression and not because of our roster, Bo Pelini, some car who ran Riley off the road, a guy with a hurt leg, a gopher hole in the field, the sun in someone's eyes, a shoe coming off during play, the other team being some juggernaut, etc. Those are a bunch of hopes and dreams excuses to see a brighter future. I understand that people want to see things through but don't make up excuses to make one aspect look better than the other.

None of them had the Bo Pelini factor though either. 9-3 paper tigers sucking against any team with a pulse!

I also prefer losing by 40 points and seeing our opponent rack up 550 yards rushing. Seeing our opponent finish the game with 70 points is the mark of a real coach.

I'm not calling for Riley's head or wanting Bo back (I wanted him fired in 2013). I'm pointing out that the coaches listed actually improved those programs in their first years, as most of them had hit rock bottom and were coming off multiple losing seasons. Baylor had 12 straight losing seasons and a murder before Briles, Stanford was a 2-10 program before Harbaugh, LSU was 1-7 in the SEC the year before Saban, and Alabama was on probation before Saban.

If you think Saban, Meyer, Harbaugh, etc. would not have us better than 2-3 right now, you are kidding yourself (Especially Meyer, who has turned around every program he's coached in just one year). Riley has not shown improvement from one game to the next so far, and his poor game management has put us in position to lose 4/5 games so far.

People bring up Bo's blowouts but remember we haven't even played a good team yet. We may very well lose by 40 to someone like Michigan State.

Not a person in the nation is thinking about blowouts losses by Pelini.

First thing they mention is at least he won 9 games and his 70% winning percentage.

Because in college football winning is more important important than anything, we think differently because we used to win.

Nobody would no about how great our fans are if we were a losing program in the last 30 years because there wouldn't be any.

If we don't improve we'll see it again soon enough.

Not likely, because unlike Bo, Banker actually knows how to stop the run.

That's nice. Bo couldn't stop the run with his own recruits to save his life. We almost lost to South Dakota St. and McNeese State at home. We DID lose to Iowa State 9-7 at home. Remember that coaching gem from Bo? We lost and almost lost to BAD TEAMS on a consistent basis with Bo as head coach. That's just what Bo did from a football performance standpoint. Now factor in his demeanor and professionalism. That's not a guy you want anywhere near your program if you want it to have any value at a national level. That's why Bo is coaching at Backwoods Ohio Valley Division III State now. Let me say this again: Bo Pelini and his "staff" do not know how to stop the run. If you're a Nebraska fan, you will understand why this is a bad thing for your team.

We've played plenty of "good" teams this season. We haven't played a great one, but Bo never played a great one either. Which team dropped 70 points on us again? The one that finished the season with 7 losses? I mean holy cow, a team with SEVEN LOSSES scored 70 points on Bo??? I'm done.

TCU, Baylor and OU were garbage programs. at the time. And those coaches showed improvement.

Alabama and LSU were average when those 2 took over.

We are worse than last year.

You are mistaken. Because nobody in the nation is thinking of Pelini. And they certainly could care less how many games he actually won because he never won anything significant.

That's why he is coaching at Backwoods Ohio Valley State Division III State right now. Period!

In a few years if this staff can't get it done with a healthy roster of players that they recruited then we can bitch and call for heads. Bo had his chance (7 damn years) didn't get us anywhere but 9 wins against shitty teams.

If we lose by 40 to MSU, does that mean we'll lose by 37 to Purdue?

All the programs you list had ssshhhaaatttyyy recent success under the previous coach. Find me one that started that poorly after an 8 or 9 win season. Also Briles and Patterson are their respective programs so to compare them is ludicrous...also you want to mention Harbaugh look at Michigan this year...5-7 last year and 4-1 tgis year...bingo...how aboy Florida 5-7 last year...undefeated this year...

Incorrect they mentioned him the other day on cfb live when talking about a coach on that hot seat with a 70% win pct. They use Nebraska as a laughable measuring stick with coaches on the hot seat because we are the idiotic program that cannot learn from history.

Previous year records have too many variables to compare. Harbaugh is an ass who's worn out his welcome everywhere he's coached. For 7 million, I'd think you could get a good coach and a "nice guy".

Lets look at 3 first year coaches this year and the teams they took over.

Michigan last 3 years under Brady Hoke; 20-18 53% winning percentatge. Harbaugh currently 4-1
Florida last 3 years under Muschamp: 21-15 58% winning percentage. Mac currently 5-0
Nebraska under Bo Pelini: 28-11 72% winning percentage. Riley currently 2-3.

Time to stop pouring the kool aid for the rest of the fan base to drink. Most people in Nebraska had the correct first reaction to Riley--"WTF?" Not sure why most of the fan base talked themselves into what a great hire this was...when the facts were there all along. This was a terrible hire. There is no excuse for how terrible Nebraska has been through 5 games.

I agree with your thoughts..but... Florida was not 5-7 last year. They were 7-6 last year and 4-8 the year before.

How many years does this guy have to "get it done"? 5 at most? In fact, does anyone seriously think MR won't be back at his Oregon beach house before 5 years have gone by?

Tough to answer that but 5-7 seasons should get it done quickly. Hoping for better than 5-7
