“I’m Jovan Dewitt.. I’m a Tarheel”

Lateral move for him. Cancer sucks big time.

I wonder if he got more money, just didn't like Lincoln or was "encouraged" to find a new job. Whatever the situation, good luck to him and I hope his health now is in great shape for the future.

Quick question: Do we have someone (GA, analyst or other) to work specifically with the kickers? Someone who actually was a specialist in college and/or the pros? OLB and special teams is not a natural fit to combine under one coach's job description other than you should have several OLBs covering kickoffs, of course, because they should also be fast and good at shedding blocks and bringing down runners.

In other words, can we find a full-time OLB coach, and then also find someone to coach up our kickers/punters, while in the meantime assigning special teams to someone who knows and understands how to get players to pursue and tackle in the open field? That was three duties assigned to one person, if I'm not mistaken.

I would guess the latter. I think Frost wanted to bring Dawson back (he coached OLBs for the Giants last year). The only question is who will coach Special Teams.

Sure. Chinander could also be OLB/DC and we could go get a DC or another position coach, or a ST guy. A lot of potential moves, but most likely they just try to fill DeWitt’s slot as is.

Any chance we can snag Diaco away from Purdue?

I wonder what kind of pay cut he is taking.... That may answer a few questions about the motivating factor for this lateral move.

I just don't know what to think of this. We have heard Frost won't make any staff changes because he is too loyal. But it seems odd Dewitt would move laterally with a possible pay cut on his own.

And if he did move on his own, why would a veteran coach like Brown want someone so horrible. And Mac has to be good because we have been told a number of times on here that he made a big impact in a short time at NC.

So confusing,

When a person goes through a severe health issue, many things can change. I wish him the best and wish us even better than the best.

This makes me happy.

Personally, I don't really care too much about the whole backstory here, just that it occurred. :)

Could be a lot of reasons. For example, he could have family reasons for wanting to be in North Carolina.

This really is kind of mind boggling. I know he fought through some shit this year, that could be big factor in the struggles of his positions. Since here his units have been horrible, even at UCF they were decent in certain areas or had a super star player, but nothing great. Why would UNC want him, at best it seems he is a lateral move from what they had. It seems like it is a down grade for him, and Im assuming he has to take a pay cut.
Which is why your 2nd option seems the most likely. I think it will be better long term for us and hopefully him as well.

IMO this is best for him and for NU. I can give a pass for the OLB depth but the special teams play was atrocious.

Is that confirmed that Dawson is coming back or just the working theory?

Yes, GA for kickers per OWH story about IWCC walk-in kicker.
Maybe give Rudd special team duties and go with co DC duties for Dawson should Dawson come back?

Some former players are lobbying for Carlos Polk. He's coached special teams in the NFL for the last 10 years. Played LB but hasn't coached that position, and hasn't coached college so does not have recruiting connections.

He was told to bounce. Frost just did it in a good way for both parties.

Im just glad we will have "some" change to the coaching staff. I would prefer one of two things, a true vet..20+ yr coach. There is no replacement for experience and would raise the overall level of our defensive staff. Or an ace recruiter that would for a dream recruiting team with fisher, held, frost.

This trickle down to Dewitt then back up to Chins is somewhat of a mystery. More than the mystery of numbers of bodies we've had at LB.
Now, in low numbers, which no one can deny, and we can take a peak around to look at other teams numbers if we really have to, the numbers that were left, we had the greater part of our attrition at LB with the coaching change,of all the attrition.
Now, since one who actually stayed decided to sell real estate, converted safeties etc, what makes us think the ones that actually played were the best out of all of them before the attrition?
Ok, then look at numbers again, we were way down, imagine if we'd had only 7 O linemen in total, before having to go strictly walkon? Thats a fair comparison, having 5 O linemen making up your starters vs 4 at LB.

Now, we played who we had, were they the best when the staff got here? Did a couple of those guys leave then? And why in hell is this Chins fault? Did Jovan go through cancer?
There's too many actual factors here to draw drastic and purely clear assessments as a fan.

I get it, losing sucks, but to even get to the point of talking about a coach getting his guys, he needs a chance to even get them first.
Come in late year one, no recruiting vetting, get cancer year two.

Ok, show me where this exact thing has happened and that coach, and that DC wasn't effected as well?

Colman IMO would be a better choice but Polk would be fine. I expect Frost to look at multiple applicants though and not just hire somebody because he's a former Husker.

Could we see Helfrich come into the equation. Obviously not as a LB coach or SPecial teams coach. The opening does give other options.

-Like giving Polk a shot at LB coach as a GA... then Helfrich as a “co- OC” with Walters with the long term plan being one of them leaves next year and if Polk does a good job is hired as a full time coach

Or just as an offensive analysts. Bama did that with Sarkisian, Oklahoma did it with Diaco.
