Football Final Game Week Takeaways: Freshmen WRs, Tristan Alvano and Charlie McBride

Final Game Week Takeaways from Matt Rhule on Thursday:

>> Freshmen WRs are as ready now as they ever have been and Rhule says they are "as fast as any group of receivers in the country"

>> Tristan Alvano struggles are due to "technical" issues, Rhule has unwavering confidence in him as the team's kicker

>> Charlie McBride's message to the Blackshirts during a visit to Thursday's practice

Official Northwestern Week Thread

What are your feelings about this upcoming game? Here's mine.

I liked Rhules message at the PC. I think he can smell a trap game and he's trying to keep the troops unified and focused.

I love that Reimer is back. He's our best all around LB.

I like that we're at home. Should help with OL penalties we had at Illinois. I still think we'll have 2 to 4, but I don't expect 8 or 9.

I haven't watched Northwestern, but a quick look at some box scores, seems they've struggled to run the ball and stop the run in many games. Not to mention squeaking by Howard.

I expect our D to stuff the run. The question will be our pass rush and coverage. Here's where I like Reimer covering TEs and RBs.

We commit to the run, get stuffed often but we bust just enough big runs and chunk pass plays to win the field position battle and have a long TD or two.

Heinrich throws a pick, we lose a fumble but we get 2 picks ourselves to even the TO battle.

We give up a few too many big pass plays but bow up in the redzone. We win 21-13.

This game will be a grind. Very easily could lose if we do the usual eff ups. It's a game we could win by 28 but we're not quite there yet.

Lemme know your predictions.

Raiola Shouldn’t Survive the Bye Week

the false starts, the personal fouls

it’s one thing for your position group to be a laughing stock, it’s another to do so while also being so undisciplined you can’t string together 6 plays without committing a penalty

we all know why he was retained. that ship has sailed. time to hire someone who knows what the F he’s doing up front

Volleyball The Players' Corner: Beason, Rodriguez gearing up for No. 1 Wisconsin

Some great insight from Merritt Beason and Lexi Rodriguez tonight on the upcoming match versus No. 1 Wisconsin. Plus, we got head coach John Cook for a few minutes as well. Hit the link.

Offensive playcalling

After rewatching the Illinois game I was actually pleased w the progression of our playcalling compared to prior in the year.
It’s just the false starts and mishandling of the football that continues to be maddening halfway through the season… I do see some progress offensively but have to look closely.
Hopefully we can clean up the penalties and turnovers.
We sure left some points out there against Illinois but damn that defense was on point

Northwestern at Nebraska Prediction and Preview
by Pete Fiutak, CollegeFootballNews.com

Northwestern (3-3, 1-2) at Nebraska (3-3, 1-2)
Saturday, October 21 - 3:30 PM (ET) - BTN

Why Northwestern Will Win
Nebraska's offense isn't going to run away and hide with a big score put on the board.

The passing game is struggling, it's not consistent, and the ground game is hit or miss. Worse yet, there's a big problem with turnovers -- again.

It seemed like the glitch was fixed after giving the ball away eight times in the first two games, there weren't issues for a few games, and then came the fumbling issue in the win over Illinois. Northwestern could use the help.

Northwestern is rested, the run defense should be to hold up, and the passing attack that showed off a few big moments in the comeback win over Minnesota and the win over UTEP should produce against the Big Ten's worst pass defense, and ........

Why Nebraska Will Win
....Northwestern is painfully inconsistent, and it's not helping that the D isn't taking the ball away.

There were three turnovers forced against UTEP, and that's been about it with just two against everyone else. There's no pass rush and not enough big things happening behind the line. Best of all for the Huskers, their running game should go off.

The Wildcat run defense isn't awful, but it's allowing a Big Ten-worst 172 rushing yards per game. There's no ground game, no controlling the tempo, and Nebraska should take advantage of it.

Grind it with the ground game, rely on the defensive front that can get behind the line -- and the third-best run defense in the nation -- and .......

What Will Happen
..... Nebraska was really, really close to being 4-2 right now, and as is at 3-3 should get within range of a bowl game with a win.

It might not be dominant, and it might not be scintillating, but Nebraska will run well and won't let Northwestern get to 100 rushing yards. It'll all come together in the second half of a grinding performance for the first run of four wins in five games since late in 2018, and the second time since starting the 2016 season 7-0.

Prediction
Nebraska 26, Northwestern 17

Spread
Nebraska is favored at home by 12 points. The O/U is at 41 points
