Football Matt Rhule: Final updates, notes ahead of Purdue

Matt Rhule met with the media for his Thursday lightning round today to give a few final updates and thoughts ahead of Purdue. Here are three of the biggest takeaways:

FIU QB

My gosh I didn’t think it could be worse than having to watch our QB’s throw, but he is awful. Literally just threw two little hitch routes to open receivers and skipped them about 3-4 yards in front of them.

Also, no Logan Smothers, but Rich Rid has Jacksonville State looking pretty good.

24 - The Nebraska defense has recorded 24 sacks through seven games this season. The sack total is already Nebraska's best total since having 27 sacks in 2019. The last time Nebraska reached 30 sacks in a season was in 2013 when the Huskers had 39 sacks.

112 - Saturday's game is the 112th Homecoming Game in University of Nebraska history. The Huskers are 84-23-4 on Homecoming and have won 11 of their last 13 Homecoming games. Nebraska is 8-2 against Big Ten opponents on Homecoming.

THE MATCHUP
Nebraska squares off against a Big Ten West opponent in Lincoln for the second straight week as the

Huskers play host to Purdue on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The game between the Huskers and the Boilermakers marks Nebraska's 2023 Homecoming contest, and it will kick off shortly after 2:30 p.m., with television coverage provided by FS1 and on the Fox Sports App. The game is also available on the Huskers Radio Network, the official Huskers App and Huskers.com.

Nebraska comes into the contest with a 4-3 overall record and a 2-2 mark in Big Ten Conference play. The Huskers have won their past two games and four of five overall to move over the .500 mark heading into the season's final five games.

The Huskers are coming off a 17-9 victory over Northwestern last Saturday in Lincoln. Defense dominated the day, with the Blackshirts limiting Northwestern to just three field goals while also recording eight sacks in the victory. It marked the sixth time in seven games this season the Nebraska defense has limited the opposition to less than 100 yards rushing.

Purdue heads to a Lincoln after a bye weekend. The Boilermakers are 2-5 overall and 1-3 in Big Ten Conference play under first-year head coach Ryan Walters. Purdue has faced one of the nation's most difficult schedules, facing six Power Five opponents to date. The Boilermakers own one of the Big Ten's best offenses, ranking fourth in the Big Ten in passing yards per game at better than 230 yards per contest.

Nebraska will be looking to end a Purdue two-game win streak in the series, as the Boilermakers won by six points last year in West Lafayette and five points in 2021 at Memorial Stadium.

SERIES HISTORY
Saturday's meeting will be the 12th matchup in the Nebraska-Purdue series. The Boilermakers own a 6-5 edge, and the teams have split four previous meetings in Lincoln.

- The series is tied at five wins apiece since Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011. The Huskers won four of the first five matchups between 2013 and 2017, and Purdue has responded by winning four of the past five since 2018.

- Four of the past six games between the schools have been decided by six points or fewer, including Purdue victories by six and five points the past two seasons

- Nebraska and Purdue will meet for the 12th consecutive season next fall in West Lafayette. However, with the Big Ten's new non-division schedule format, the schools will not meet in 2025 or 2026, before resuming with games in 2027 (Lincoln) and 2028 (West Lafayette)

Purdue 43, Nebraska 37

WEST LAFAYETTE
- Nebraska offense tallied 476 yards of total offense, but Purdue led with 608 offensive yards in a 43-37 win over the Huskers at Ross-Ade Stadium on Saturday night.

Purdue improved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten as the Boilermakers got out to an early 10-0 lead and never trailed Nebraska, who fell to 3-4 and 2-2 in the Big Ten.

Malcolm Hartzog got the Huskers off to a strong start, intercepting a pass from Boilermaker quarterback Aiden O'Connell in the opening drive of the game, but Purdue was able to hold the Huskers scoreless in the first quarter while getting off to a 10-0 lead. A two-yard pass from O'Connell to TJ Sheffield and a 37-yard field goal from Mitchell Fineran led Purdue into the second quarter.

The Huskers responded early in the second quarter as Jaquez Yant rushed for a one-yard touchdown with 13:16 to go. After holding the Boilmakers on the next drive, NU was able to tie the game at 10-10 with a 36-yard field goal from Timmy Bleekrode.

Purdue followed with 17 unanswered points before the half. A 31-yard touchdown pass from O'Connell to Charlie Jones gave the Boilermakers the lead, while a 37-yard field goal, a one-yard rushing touchdown from Devin Mockobee and a 43-yard field goal extended the lead at the end of the second quarter.

The Huskers came out of the half strong, scoring on the opening drive of the third quarter. Trey Palmer scored a touchdown on a 37-yard reception from Casey Thompson.

After Mitchell Fineran missed a 41-yard field goal attempt, NU took over on the Nebraska 24. Despite a 60-yard rush from Palmer to start the drive, the Huskers settled for a 22-yard field goal.

NU's defense was unable to stop O'Connell as he went 75 yards in six plays, scoring a touchdown on a 28-yard passing touchdown to TJ Sheffield.

Thompson responded quickly, going the distance in two plays and 32 seconds with a 72-yard pass to Palmer for his second touchdown of the quarter. Despite only having possession for 3:03 of the third quarter, the Huskers were able to outscore the Boilermakers, 17-7.

NU went into the fourth quarter, down 34-30, but Purdue moved the ball down the field to start the fourth quarter and adding three with a 34-yard field goal.

After Thompson recorded his second interception of the night, the Boilermakers were able to add six more after a two-yard touchdown pass from O'Connell to Charlie Jones made it a 43-30 game. Fineran missed the extra point attempt.

Thompson again looked to Palmer to go the distance and quickly. Thompson completed the 64-yard pass to Palmer. At Purdue's own six-yard line, Grant rushed up the middle for the touchdown.

However, the Huskers were unable to hold the Boilermakers in their final drive, recording the 43-37 loss.

The Husker offense totaled 476 yards, with 354 passing yards and 122 on the ground. Casey Thompson completed 16-of-29 passes for 354 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Trey Palmer pulled in seven catches for 237 yards and two touchdowns, while also recording 60 rushing yards. Palmer's 237 receiving yards marked the most in a single game in Nebraska history.

The Big Red held the Boilermakers to 608 yards, with 391 passing yards and 217 yards on the ground. Myles Farmer and Isaac Gifford both led NU with nine tackles while Nick Henrich added one tackle for loss. Malcolm Hartzog snagged an interception for the third game in a row.

Football Not all head coaches work with scout teams, but Rhule finds value in it

Good stuff from Matt Rhule on why he finds value in working with the scout team during the week.

Recruiting Nebraska RB commit Kewan Lacy ready to build program up

Caught up briefly with Nebraska running back commit Kewan Lacy just now. I wanted to get his overall thoughts on his first game day experience in Lincoln.

"It was a great experience," Lacy said. "I feel great about next year and my class coming in. I can’t wait to work and build the program back up."

I spotted Lacy hanging out with defensive back commit Mario Buford quite a bit before the game. Those two were also with Florida native Jacory Barney Jr. a lot. Lacy said it was cool just getting to know each other more. He feels like they are all going to be pretty close.

Lacy also told me that his relationship with running backs coach EJ Barthel is going well.

"It's been going great got a lot of faith and trust in him and coach g [Garret McGuire]."

Lacy doesn't have any plans for visits right now but would like to be back in Lincoln for a night game this season if possible.

OT: Prayer Request - He's home!

Our pup is coming home! Liver enzymes aren't completely back to normal, but have went down the last two days so think he's going to be okay.

Thanks so much for your prayers!

OP: Our 6 month old puppy ate some gum with xylitol which is toxic to dogs. His liver enzymes are high which isn't a good sign. In the animal hospital now under observation and getting treatment. Next couple days will be crucial.

We just lost our 1 year old dog this June when his collar broke and he ran out into the street and got hit by a pickup. Kids were very attached to him but are even more attached to our new puppy. That is especially true for my daughter who is on the spectrum. Dogs do truly become part of the family.

I know there are a lot more important and tragic things that you can pray for, but in your charity I'd appreciate it if you'd send one up for his healing but also surrender to and acceptance of God's will whatever it be for me and my family.

TIA
